Even though Arsenal was expected to sign a defensive midfielder in January, they just signed a left back named Nacho Monreal from Malaga right at the end of the transfer window. Etienne Capoue and Mohamed Diame are the names that were linked with the North London club throughout the window.
Wenger has said that he almost completed another signing in last few days but that mystery name was expected to be David Villa from Arsenal. Capoue’s agent revealed that both Arsenal and Tottenham were interested in the 24-year old midfield enforcer and they will try again at the end of the season, according to Metro.
Toulouse who lost Moussa Sissoko to Newcastle were unwilling to sell Capoue as it is very difficult to find replacements during the closing stages of the window. After Alexander Song left the club, Arsenal are forced to play Arteta in the defensive role. Even though Arteta is doing a fair job, Wenger believes they need a steel-type player who can grind and win back possession in the midfield. Capoue has all the mentioned qualities.
Arsenal will try to sign Capoue and David Villa very early in next window, according to sources close to Arsenal.
