Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen’s future at the Emirates stadium looked uncertain for major part of the last season. While his inconsistent performance was one of the reasons for this, his fallout with his manager was also touted as another reason for this. The Belgian was relegated to the bench after all these, adding fuel to major speculations of his leaving the club this summer.
But after things have turned out at Arsenal in this transfer season till now, it looks like Vermaelen may finally get to stay at the London club. Manager Wenger had, from the beginning of the current business scenarios, wanted Swansea defender Ashley Williams for his side. Wenger has high regards for the player and believes that his inclusion will be a major boost for the club in the defence. Williams has been a pillar for Swansea the previous season and the club values his service to a high extent. Thus the club has asked for a fee of £12m from Arsenal for the defender which has now put the deal in jeopardy. Although Arsenal want to sign the player for the next season, they do not value him high enough to spend so much money on him and now it looks like that the deal has completely stalled.
Amid all these the one person who may be the beneficiary is their veteran defender Vermaelen, who may get a lifeline at the club for Williams not joining. Wenger may not risk losing such a veteran player when no replacement has been lined up and Vermaelen may stay on at the Emirates for one more season.
In other news, the Arsenal fans may be super excited with the news of Real Madrid star Gonzalo Higuain joining the club this summer, but it seems that not all quarters think likewise. The bookies do not believe that the Argentine forward would be a huge success at the club in his first season and thus they have put an odd of 1/3 on Higuain not scoring 20 or more goals this summer.
Arsenal are set to complete the transfer of the forward very soon and he would be the club’s record signing. But it looks like that many believe that it would require much time for the player to get used to the fast paced Premier League and fire in goals.
