Manchester United might have announced Jose Mourinho as their next manager and now the real hard work begins as the Portuguese tries to bring in quality into the side. United would not be playing in the Champions League next season and the only thing that could attract any of the players is the name of Jose Mourinho and the history of the club.
One player being linked with a move to the Premier League side is Kostas Manolas of AS Roma. The 24-year-old had a pretty decent season with the Rome side as they finished third and will be playing in the Champions League next season as well but Manchester United calling might not be easy for him to resist.
Manchester United have required a lot of quality at the back and Manolas could be the answer to their requirements next season, especially under a manager who is known for his defensive nature when he sets up teams.
A perfect fit at Manchester
Manolas played 36 games for Roma last season and had a pass percentage of 86.5 all throughout the Serie A campaign, not only was he good with his passing, he h]averaged incredible 3.4 aerial headers won per game for the Roman side side.
The Serie A is one of the best leagues if a player is looking to develop his defending and Manolas does seem to be the real deal at the moment. Manchester United do not really have a world class central defender in their ranks at the moment and the Greek star could well be the answer for Jose Mourinho to build his team from the back, like he normally does.
Manolas doesn’t have any inherent weaknesses and is known for his heading ability more than anything else. The 24-year-old also knows that his passing range isn’t the greatest and likes to keep it short and simple, not over-complicating stuff and that is possibly his greatest asset, the need to play football simply.
Chris Smalling and Manolas could be a good pairing for the next season and hopefully this would mean that Daley Blind can be shifted away from the central role in defense, which he has had to take up under Louis van Gaal, even though he really wasn’t a defender.
Manolas does have a lot in his bag, his strength and heading would make him a perfect option in the Premier League, though he would cost Manchester United a hefty sum next season, the fact that the Red Devils don’t really have many options to sign up next season means that the Greek defender could be the best they get all season and that would not be the worst signing they would have made in recent years.
