According to reports from the Mirror, Newcastle United are working on completing a deal for Norwich City attacker Jacob Murphy.
The 22-year old winger has been attracting strong interest from fellow Premier League sides Southampton and Crystal Palace as well, but manager Rafael Benitez is keen on getting the deal done at the earliest and is reportedly closing in on the £8million rated England youth international.
There was plenty of interest in Murphy from several Championship clubs, but following an impressive campaign with the England U21 side in the European Championships last month in Poland, Newcastle have stepped up their pursuit of the midfielder. If the Tynesiders manage to sign Murphy, here’s how they could line-up next season:
The 26-year old established himself as the first-choice last season in the second tier. Newcastle have been interested in signing Joe Hart from Manchester City but if that falls through, Darlow is most likely to keep his place.
The former Tottenham man did impress in parts last time around. Considering that there has been no real interest in bringing in a full-back, Yedlin should keep his spot.
The 26-year old centre-half arrived last week from La Liga side Eibar. Despite Jamaal Lascelles’ impressive performances last time around, we could see Lejeune oust last season’s captain.
The Republic of Ireland international formed a strong partnership with Lascelles. He has loads of Premier League experience and will be a valuable part of the team.
Again, with no full-backs being sought after in the market, it is very likely that Dummett will be the first-choice left-back at the St. James’ Park next season.
Newcastle’s linchpin in the middle of the park, the England international will be crucial to their chances of putting up a strong fight on their return.
Alongside Shelvey, it will be former Arsenal man Isaac Hayden who will be tasked with providing the solidity and the defensive shield to the back four.
Arguably, Newcastle’s best player last season, Matt Ritchie is extremely pivotal to their fortunes and is irreplaceable.
A need for a new playmaker for Newcastle cannot be understated at the moment. However, with no signing made for that position yet, as of now, Ayoze Perez will take that spot.
If Murphy signs, he will walk into the starting XI and feature on the left flank, ahead of Atsu. The 22-year old scored 9 and set up 8 in all competitions, compared to Atsu’s 5 goals and 3 assists. The Norwich man is likely to be a bigger threat and should start.
Leading the line will be last season’s top scorer Dwight Gayle. The Englishman doesn’t have the best of records in the Premier League from his Crystal Palace days, but he looked a reinvigorated striker last season and Benitez will be hoping he carries that form into the new season as well.
