Why West Brom Should Splash The Cash On Mamadou Sakho This Summer

According to reports from BBC Sport, West Bromwich Albion are plotting a move for Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho.

The Baggies have been in the market for a new central defender in the summer, despite having brought in Ahmed Hegazy on loan from Al Ahly. And the rumours have only intensified once it was revealed that the club had turned down an £18million offer for captain Jonny Evans from Manchester City. Manager Tony Pulis confirmed that the bid had been rejected, but also went on to say that if a bigger offer happens to come along, they might consider a sale.

As quoted by Sky Sports, he said:

“They’ve made an offer which we’ve turned down.

“Every player is for sale at the right price. It is absolutely crazy to say a team like West Brom won’t sell players if people weren’t going to put an enormous amount of money in front of you.”

The probability of the transfer of Evans, combined with injury problems and an ageing backline mean that a new centre-half wouldn’t be the worst idea for the Baggies.

Signing Sakho does make a lot of sense too. The Frenchman hasn’t kicked a ball for Liverpool in over a year now, after his fall-out with manager Jurgen Klopp. And going by the things, it doesn’t seem like the German would change his stance on the player. So the 27-year old needs to leave in order to resurrect his career.

Pulis was interested in signing the Frenchman last summer as well, albeit on loan. But Sakho turned down a move away from Anfield (BBC Sport). However, he did end up leaving the club temporarily, joining Pulis’ former club, Crystal Palace on loan in January this year. The Frenchman played a pivotal part in helping the Eagles survive the drop to the Championship. Sakho put in some scintillating displays in the Palace backline, helping them to wins over the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea.

Strong and extremely athletic, Sakho has proven himself to be a reliable option to have in the ranks and was the first-choice at Anfield before his tiff with Klopp. A tenacious tackler and an excellent header of the ball, the former Paris Saint-Germain defender ticks all the boxes required of a defender, to excel in England. With his decent turn of pace, ball-playing abilities and crisp passing, he will add a different dimension to the West Brom defence.

Crystal Palace too are interested in signing him, but are unwilling to match the £30million price-tag that Liverpool have placed on Sakho. West Brom should look to capitalise on this and go all out for the French international. The 27-year old has the experience and has proven himself in the Premier League and fits the mould of a player that Tony Pulis prefers. If Evans does leave, the Baggies will have money to spend, and they should definitely splash the cash and sign Sakho.
