Rangers are still looking to complete a deal for Hearts winger Jamie Walker before Thursday night is over and done, and I think it’s vital that they do. Their interest in him is long standing and they have already signed numerous players from Gorgie in recent years. So another jump from Edinburgh to Glasgow now would come as no surprise whatsoever.
Hearts’ previous stance was to say that Walker was not for sale, but things are changing rapidly at Tynecastle now and there has been even more upheaval in recent days with director Craig Levein claiming he can do the manager’s job as well as his own.
After Ian Cathro left the Edinburgh club as manager, it appeared to pave the way for Walker to join Rangers. The former boss had accused Walker of losing his focus given the transfer rumours but now that he is out of the way following a couple of poor cup performances, the move could be back on.
Hearts, like most sides these days, could do with the money and so any reasonable bid from Rangers could be met positively in the closing days of the window for a player the Bears could really use following the sale of Barrie McKay to Nottingham Forest.
Despite that apparent fact, Hearts have been asking a lot and Rangers’ own stance now is that they will not make another bid for Walker during this transfer window unless the Jambos lower their valuation of the winger.
Having already been on somewhat of a spree this summer though, Rangers are apparently unwilling to spend that much right now, especially on a player who is in the final year of his contract and has shown little interest in signing a new one.
He could end up at Ibrox on the cheap in January or even for free in a year’s time, so Hearts you would think, would be wise to take what money is on offer now. For their part though, Rangers cannot afford to mess about with this squad and would do well to move quickly in bridging the gap between themselves and Celtic.
Walker would be an excellent signing and should he suddenly be encouraged to put pen to paper on a new deal at Hearts, then a cheap transfer is off the cards immediately. If Rangers value Walker, then they need to get their hands in their pocket right now.
