Jann-Fiete Arp

Scout Report – Jann-Fiete Arp

According to recent reports in Germany (h/t Metro), Chelsea have made an approach to sign Hamburg wonder kid Jann-Fiete Arp.

Reigning Premier League champions Chelsea have made a request to sign Arp but they face competition from London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham, who have also made an enquiry for the forward. The Blues could finally get their man next summer as his contract will have just one year remaining.

With the forward emerging as one of the most courted young talents in the Bundesliga, let’s take a close look at who exactly Arp is and what he would bring to the table if he joins Chelsea.

Origin

Born on 6 January 2000 in Bad Segeburg, Germany, Jann-Fiete Arp joined the Hamburger SV academy in 2010 and has since scored heavily for the club’s youth teams.

The 17-year-old only made his senior debut for Hamburg this season and in doing so he became the first player born in this millennium to make an appearance in the Bundesliga. Arp has made three appearances for the senior team, scoring two goals, with his debut goal coming very recently against Hertha Berlin.

Arp led Germany in the UEFA European Under-17 Championship in May and was one of the talents who caught the eye. He became the first player to score two hat-tricks in one UEFA tournament (U-17 level), as Germany reached semi-finals before being beaten by eventual champions Spain.

The striker scored 7 goals in 5 matches for Germany at the UEFA European U17 Championship in Croatia and was awarded the prestigious Fritz Walter Medal. Later this year, Arp played in the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup in India, where he scored 5 goals.

In all, Arp has a staggering 18 goals in just 19 U-17 games for Germany.

What Does He Offer?

Arp is a big, lanky forward and suits the No.9 position perfectly. At 6ft 2in, he cannot be bullied easily and can lead the line without any qualms. Being only 17, Arp has a sharp eye for goal backed up by a cool and composed finish.

At such a tender age, Arp already looks a cut above most of his peers around Europe. He is a typical poacher in the game and demonstrated the fact in the European U-17 championship earlier this year.

The striker can score different types of goals- with his right foot, left-foot as well as with the head. He’s a very skilful player and uses his intelligence to get into good positions to score. Well developed physically, the teenager has a very mature reading of the game which often fuels his sharp decision-making on the field.

In the modern era of football where kids look up to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, Arp’s role model is Tottenham’s Harry Kane since he plays in a similar way. In terms of his own game, the German feels he has a lot of qualities to be a fantastic striker but he needs to improve certain areas, most notably his left-foot. Someone very mature for his young age, Arp is destined for bigger things.

What Does The Future Hold?

Arp’s hot form has not gone unnoticed and thus Hamburg have handed him a new contract, which keeps him with the club until 2019.

Despite interest from some really big clubs, Arp’s agent Jurgen Milewski feels the striker is not affected by any transfer speculation and wants to continue his development with Hamburg.

“All those rumours don’t bother Fiete. Just let him play and in the end, Fiete decides on his own what he wants and what he does not,” Milewski told MoPo (h/t Goal).

With Arp contracted to Hamburg until 2019, Chelsea have to break the bank for the German hotshot. Antonio Conte has promoted youth since joining Chelsea, but one has to note that a lot of young talents have fizzled out after making their debut under the Italian.

This could potentially hamper the German’s progress and time on the field. Thus, having already established a sense of rhythm with Hamburg, Arp should perhaps consider staying put with them for the near future at least.

Arp is a rough diamond with huge potential. Remember the name!
