13 goals in 33 games – Signing this 25-year-old Ligue 1 ace could boost Leeds’ promotion hopes

Why Leeds United must make a move for Moussa Konate in January

According to French newspaper L’Equipe (h/t Yorkshire Evening Post), Leeds United were interested in signing Amiens striker Moussa Konate in January. The 25-year-old was a part of Senegal’s World Cup squad following his fantastic debut season with French club Amiens that saw him score 13 goals in 33 appearances.

The Senegalese started his career in his native with ASC Toure Kunda de Mbour before heading to Israel to play for Maccabi Tel Aviv. He then had spells in Russia, Italy and Switzerland before finally settling down in France with Amiens. After his spell with FC Sion in Switzerland, it was no surprise to see Konate earn a move to Ligue 1 last summer.

Although Konate hasn’t had a blistering start to the new season, he still remains one of the crucial figures at Amiens. Hence, would it be beneficial for Leeds to reignite their interest in Konate?

Leeds have enjoyed a superb start to the new Championship season under manager Marcelo Bielsa. The gaffer has made Leeds play an exciting brand of football and going by their early season form, one cannot deny that they are one of the real contenders to earn Premier League promotion next term.

But for Leeds to make sure they have a squad capable of sustaining the gruelling second half of the campaign, Bielsa certainly needs to add a couple of players more when the transfer window re-opens. One area the Argentine manager should definitely look to strengthen is the forward department.

Patrick Bamford arrived at Elland Road in the summer from Middlesbrough amidst a lot of fanfare but before he could weave his magic in the famous white, he suffered a knee injury last month and has been ruled out for four months.

Now that Bamford is a long-term casualty, Bielsa must bring in Konate to ease the burden off the shoulders of Kemar Roofe, who has been a revelation for Leeds this season. Konate’s height and stature allow him to physically dominate centre-backs in the air and also shrug them off when on the ball. He is an exciting striker with raw pace and good technique.

The Senegalese is one of the lethal finishers in front of the goal as far as the Ligue 1 is concerned. Konate is a versatile forward capable of playing on either wing and as a central striker. Filled with pace and power, Konate should be able to play up front for Leeds. He is an instinctive finisher and could thrive if paired with another striker.

Hence, Leeds must do everything in their powers to sign Konate in January. The Senegal international would represent a coup for Leeds as Bielsa strives hard to win promotion.
