14 goals, 17 assists – Southampton signing this 26-year-old star for £5m would be nothing but daylight robbery

Southampton opinion: Should the Saints sign Thomas Goiginger?

Southampton struggled until they appointed former RB Leipzig manager Ralph Hassenhuttl and the man nicknamed the Alpine Klopp changed the course of the club. It saw them start playing some wonderful football, beating the likes of Arsenal, Leicester City, Everton and even Wolves.

Slowly the Saints formed an identity. Under Mark Hughes, they had next to nothing going for them, with the former Stoke City boss simply sending players out and hoping for the best. It’s why they struggled in the first half of the season, winning just one game out of their first 15.

Yet, the fact that they managed six draws in the time, saw the club manage to survive. It would have gotten worse if not for Hassenhuttl and the Saints know that they have to support the boss, as he prepares to make wholesome changes to the squad.

They have a lot of deadwood that they need to get rid of, including Charlie Austin, Fraser Forster and Mohamed Elyounoussi. All players who have struggled and more importantly, players who look out of place under the new manager.

A lot of things have to change and one of Hassenhuttl’s biggest strengths is to get the best out of nearly any player. Thomas Goiginger is one such man and the Daily Mail has reported that Southampton have taken a keen interest in the 26-year-old.

He finished his season, having contributed to 14 goal and 17 assists in all competitions, with 6 and 11 respectively in the Austrian Bundesliga. A highly underrated league, the Austrian Bundesliga is a lot like it’s German neighbour and the competition levels are just as high.

It’s why a lot of Bundesliga sides opt to send their players out on loan to the Austrian Bundesliga. It’s exactly why a move for Thomas Goiginger makes a lot of sense as he will add quality in the wide areas for the club.

Furthermore, his pace and directness in the final third is something that the club have really missed this season and a £5million transfer fee makes him a bargain. The 26-year-old is far from a typical Southampton signing but it’s one that has to be made.

Conclusion

Thomas Goiginger may not be the world-class superstar that any Southampton fan wants at the club but the 26-year-old does represent a bargain option. He has shown that he can consistently produce goals and assists for any side he plays for, which is an added bonus for Southampton.
