Two creative midfielders Newcastle must consider signing in January
Newcastle United are still waiting for their first win in the Premier League this season after they drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace last weekend.
Newcastle remain in the bottom three but moved up a place after their draw with Crystal Palace on Saturday. The Magpies had a difficult start, playing Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal and it’s high time Rafael Benitez does something to change his club’s fortunes.
More than the defensive problems, goalscoring has been a big worry for Benitez with the likes of Saloman Rondon, Joselu and Yoshinori Muto struggling in front of the goal. What is more alarming for Benitez is how little his players create chances for the strikers to thrive on.
Clearly, new signings are needed and the advanced midfield may well be the area for improvement, with the first-team looking very thin in that department. Ayoze Perez is Benitez’s preferred option behind the striker but the Spaniard has failed to contribute with a single goal so far this term.
Keeping that in mind, here are two creative players Newcastle must sign in January.
Alejandro Gomez (Atlanta)
Newcastle must shell out money to sign a player who can provide assists and score crucial goals from the No.10 role. In that case, Atlanta’s Alejandro Gomez could be a blockbuster signing for the Magpies.
Gomez, 30, has started the Serie A season in blistering form, scoring three goals and providing two assists in four games till date. A technically gifted player who can play as an attacking midfielder or a second striker, the Italian-Argentine can score goals and also provide assists for others.
Gomez has an eye for key passes, is a threat from set-pieces and is lethal in front of the goal. The 30-year-old could be can perform various roles and be effective at all times. Hence, the Magpies must definitely make a move for him.
Nick Powell (Wigan Athletic)
Nick Powell was one of the crucial players in Wigan’s successful League One campaign last season. And Powell has managed to replicate that form in the Championship, scoring four goals and three assists in the league games this season.
Newcastle must try poaching Powell in January as the 24-year-old could be an ideal fit for Benitez’s style of play. The former Manchester United man can play as an attacking midfielder or as a secondary striker and can bring creativity to the team.
