2 Marquee Players Liverpool Need To Sign To Compete With Man City

After the 4-0 victory at the Vitality Stadium, Liverpool are now unbeaten in their last 12 games in all competitions and are one of the in-form sides in the Premier League. However, they still find themselves 7 points away from Manchester United, who are at 2nd spot, and 18 away from Manchester City who are at the top of the table.

Jurgen Klopp has done a spectacular job since the move to Anfield, but his side has a few frailties in the squad that need to be addressed quickly. Liverpool’s owners have not really gone out and spent big in recent summers. However, with success within reach, they will be compelled to invest in the squad and Klopp is certain to add some of the best players to the club, if given the chance.

So who should Liverpool sign to become as strong as the Manchester clubs? Here are two marquee signings that can make Liverpool great again.

Leon Goretzka (FC Schalke)

The €23m-rated German midfielder is fast turning into one of the most dependable midfielders in Europe. He has also made it into the German national team and is expected to be a regular in the starting XI for Joachim Low for the years to come. With 4 goals in 11 Bundesliga appearances this season, Goretzka is unsettled at Schalke and is ready to quit the club as a free agent at the end of the season.

Reports claim that Liverpool are front-runners for his signature and could also sign him in January. Given their issues in defensive midfield, Goretzka could be a game-changing addition to the Reds. He already has 101 Bundesliga appearances, to add to 12 national team appearances, where he has 6 goals to his name, which makes him a player Liverpool cannot miss out on.

Jose Gimenez (Atletico Madrid)

Liverpool have been an absolute treat to watch in the final third, with some of the best players in Europe constantly creating and scoring chances for the side. However, the Reds still find themselves only at 4th place and the biggest reason for that is their defensive weakness. Liverpool have been fragile and brittle at the back and are never too far away from a mistake. They are in desperate need of a CB, who can stabilise and add solidity to their backline.

Virgil van Dijk is the name the manager wants but the Dutch international is hard to get, which might force Klopp to look at other alternatives. Uruguayan defender Jose Gimenez, rated at €28m, is struggling for game time at Atletico Madrid and is a player who Liverpool should definitely look at. Tailor-made for the English game and experienced, the 22-year old could solve most problems at the back for Liverpool.
