Signing Greg Docherty Would Be Crucial To Rangers’ Dream Of Playing European Football And Here’s Why

Rangers are looking to sign Hamilton Academical midfielder Greg Docherty this January, however, they face a tough battle for his signature with English Championship side Cardiff City also looking to bring him in during the current window.

Light Blues boss Graeme Murty is said to be a huge fan of the box-to-box midfield player and sees him as a natural Rangers player, however, Neil Warnock is also keen on him and is looking to tempt him to England with Premier League football next season still a possibility.

The 21-year-old Docherty has a contract at Hamilton lasting until 2020, with a number of clubs making at least tentative enquiries about him, though he is currently seen as absolutely vital to Martin Canning’s team. Docherty has made 21 appearances in all competitions for the Accies this season and has already been tipped to reach the top of Scottish football due to his combative, all-action style.

Docherty would be the latest player to join what is yet another revolution at the club, with Rangers having made a big effort to refresh the squad during the winter break after the loan signings of Jamie Murphy and Sean Goss.

As well as those two new players, forgotten men Andy Halliday and Michael O’Halloran have also returned from loan spells elsewhere while Pedro Caixinha acolyte Carlos Pena has been reunited with the Portuguese manager at Cruz Azul.

Docherty could be the latest player to give this squad a completely new look, with the man from Milngavie having done more than his fair share of defensive work for Hamilton, yet coming up with 3 goals and 6 assists in his 21 appearances in the league so far.

Despite Hamilton’s continued struggles in the top division, Docherty has been recognised by his country, having played three times for Scotland’s under-21 side and, much like Ryan Jack, he may see going to Rangers as a way to getting into the full Scotland side on a regular basis in the future.

If he arrives this month, then Docherty could be challenging players of the quality of Jack and also Graham Dorrans for a place, suddenly giving the Rangers squad a far better look and all this after matching Celtic stride for stride in the last Old Firm derby at Parkhead.

The second half of the campaign is massive for the Gers who have hopes of playing European football and pushing Celtic as far as they can, as well as seeing off rivals Aberdeen and Hibernian.
