Defending champions Chelsea did not start the season on a strong note as they lost to Burnley on the opening day but since then, they have managed to turn things around and are now primed for a top-three finish. Their performances have most certainly improved and with the club set to finish in a Champions League spot by the end of the season, they will need reinforcements once the summer window rolls around.
At present, Antonio Conte’s squad is strong but there are quite a few areas they will be looking to improve. In the recently concluded January window, the Blues managed to sign long-time target Ross Barkley, Olivier Giroud and Emerson Palmieri and that was good business.
That said, there is still room for improvement and with that in mind, here are three players the Blues must consider signing in the summer window.
Lemar has been linked with a move to join Chelsea since last summer and with Arsenal having signed Henrikh Mkhitaryan, they might be less likely to pursue the talented Frenchman.
The young attacker played a starring role as Monaco lifted the Ligue 1 trophy last season and he is regarded as one of the most promising players across Europe. Also with Eden Hazard’s future at the club uncertain, a player like Lemar would prove to be a valuable addition.
Gimenez is a solid centre-back and has plenty of experience as well despite being just 23 years of age. With a cold war brewing between David Luiz and Conte, the veteran defender might exit Stamford Bridge in the summer.
He has been iced out of the squad for quite some time now and given the club’s reliance on the 3-4-3 system, it is important to have depth in that area. Hence, Gimenez is talented and skilled and he should definitely be one of the names on Conte’s hit list for the summer.
This might seem like an ambitious option but he could prove to be such a good signing. Alvaro Morata impressed initially but his performances have deteriorated. With Giroud in the mix, things might be different since some of the Spaniard’s burden will be relieved.
However, if he fails to do well for the rest of the season, Dembele will be an option Conte must definitely consider. He is lethal, consistent and has a knack for finding the back of the net as well and could be the next big thing at Stamford Bridge.
