Manchester United are on the lookout for a new midfielder this summer and with the transfer window fast approaching, there have been a lot of speculation. But if latest reports are to be believed, the Red Devils are particularly keen on bringing either Jorginho (a Liverpool target) or Jean Michael Seri to Old Trafford. In the past few weeks, United have been aggressively linked to both these players but regardless of who they pursue, they will be faced with quite a lot of competition.
Jorginho and Seri have been at the very top of their game throughout the season so far and that has rightfully attracted attention from some of the top clubs in the Premier League, United being one of them. With Michael Carrick’s impending retirement, Ander Herrera’s lacklustre displays and the futures of Marouane Fellaini and Paul Pogba uncertain, United could definitely use either of these two midfielders on their team.
But who should they splash the cash on? Let’s take a look at their stats and determine which player can provide a greater edge.
In 28 appearances across competitions for Napoli this season, Jorginho has scored 3 goals and provided 4 assists. His pass success rate stands at 89.1% and he makes an average of 1.5 key passes per game. In 24 Serie A matches this term, the player has also created a total of 37 chances and his shot accuracy is 36%. As far as his defensive contributions are concerned, Jorginho 2 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 0.3 clearances per game.
Seri, on the other hand, has appeared 33 times for OGC Nice across competitions this campaign. Until now, he has chipped in with a solitary goal and 4 assists, while boasting of a pass success rate of 90.8%. Averaging 2 key passes per game, Seri has created a whopping 42 chances in 21 Ligue 1 appearances this season. His shot accuracy stands at 54% and when it comes to defensive work, the player averages 0.9 tackles, 0.5 interceptions and 0.4 clearances per game.
As one can see, Seri has outperformed Jorginho in several technical aspects whereas when it comes to scoring goals and defensive work, the latter has beaten the Nice midfielder. More often than not, stats do not account for everything and it is the technicality that matters on the field. With that in mind, United might be inclined to make a move for Seri over Jorginho. That said, even if they end up signing Jorginho instead, there is no doubt that it will still prove to be a spectacular deal.
