As the Championship season draws to a close, one thing is for certain – Aston Villa stand a pretty good chance of securing a promotion to the top-flight. And if they do, Steve Bruce is likely to make an attempt to sign Bristol City defender Joe Bryan. Villa have been absolutely exceptional this season and they put in yet another commanding performance against league leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers recently, to further solidify their position.
It makes sense for them to target a defender as strong as Joe Bryan if they secure a promotion. The left-back has played a starring role for Bristol City this season and he has even chipped in with 3 goals and 2 assists. His prolific performances have even attracted attention from a few Premier League clubs and if the Villans manage to beat the competition to acquire his services, it will prove to be a coup.
When it comes to the left-back role at Aston Villa right now, Neil Taylor hasn’t quite lived up to his billing and it comes as no surprise that Bruce is on the lookout for other options. The fact that the manager has chosen to deploy Alan Hutton ahead of Taylor speaks volumes about his lacklustre displays because Hutton is not even a natural left-back.
Despite appearing regularly for the Championship outfit this season, Taylor’s form has been inconsistent and poor, thus bringing about the need for a new left-back, especially if they manage to get promoted.
When it comes to Joe Bryan, he is undoubtedly one of the best in the Championship right now. The 24-year-old is the true example of a modern-day fullback; he can attack and defend with equal gusto. He possesses excellent pace and attacking intent while also boasting of brilliant defensive work. A player like him can work wonders at boosting Villa’s overall performances by establishing a solid presence in the left-back area.
However, one thing to bear in mind is that Villa can attempt to sign him only if they manage to seal a promotion. He would be quite an expensive signing in the Championship. That said, there is no doubting Taylor’s talent but how a player performs on the field is very important and on that front, the Villa defender has been rather ineffective.
Hence, a move for Bryan does seem like the need of the hour for Villa but for now, they will have to focus on securing a move to the Premier League.
