Why Tottenham must avoid signing 24-year-old Barcelona midfield ace and look elsewhere

Andre Gomes

As per a report from The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are keen on signing Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes and are also ready to fight West Ham United to acquire his services.

Spurs have been interested in Gomes for a while now and if they play their cards right, they could stand a good chance of leapfrogging their London rivals to snap him up in a summer deal. Tottenham will definitely enjoy greater chances of persuading him to move to North London since they can offer the prospect of Champions League football.

But, do the club really need him?

Ever since Gomes joined Barcelona from Valencia, things have not gone according to plans. He has failed to live up to his billing and one cannot really blame him.

To thrive in a club with so many celebrated stars can be a daunting task for a lot of big players. Hence, it comes as no surprise that Gomes has struggled to make a place for himself in the first-team squad.

As far as talent is concerned, there is no doubt that the 24-year-old Gomes boasts of excellent skills. He can be lethal in attacking situations and can make a difference in a lot of scenarios. However, his form has been rather inconsistent with Barcelona and he never fit in too. Things could be different with Tottenham but will he be worth the money?

Andre Gomes

If the move does materialise, it seems highly unlikely that Gomes would receive better chances of regular game time at Tottenham. Spurs currently have a wide array of attacking options in the final third.

The likes of Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Heung-Min Son, Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela are all battling it out for starting spots. Furthermore, it would be better for Mauricio Pochettino to avoid disrupting the balance in the advanced positions since the set-up seems to be working wonders the way it is.

When it comes to the central midfield positions, Tottenham have Eric Dier, Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama vying for regular spots.

However, The Sun has claimed that Dembele’s future with the club is uncertain. One might suggest that Gomes could be utilised as his replacement but they are quite different in terms of their natural playing styles. Thus, for now, it might be better for Tottenham to steer clear of the Barcelona midfielder and look for options elsewhere.
