Derby County have had an interesting season so far and they stand a good chance of securing promotion to the Premier League. They are one win away from the playoffs and from there on, it’s anybody’s game to make it up to the top-flight.
If they do make the playoffs, suffice to say their season has been a success. In fact, they were never expected to make a challenge for the title and the playoffs seemed like the best option for them to gain promotion.
Even if they stay back in the Championship, their aspirations for the next year should be higher. And to elevate their game, the club will need to recruit well – hungry, quality players that want to shine in the Championship. A perfect example of a player from this category is Marko Grujic.
Derby have conceded the most goals in the top eight this year but they are known to have a solid defence – which is a sure-shot sign that their midfielders are not protecting them enough.
Huddlestone is a great passer of the ball but unfortunately, he isn’t getting any younger, and he can’t cover ground as easily.
In comparison, the young Liverpool player has spent the second half of this season on loan at Cardiff and has really stood out. He has proven to be a rock-solid shield for the Cardiff defenders. He wins a lot of aerial duels in the centre of the park and is adept at tackling as well.
What Derby seem to have lacked this season is defensive stability. Instead of relying on merely scoring goals, a player like Grujic would be the perfect addition to help achieve a more balanced approach. He has a lot of potential, and would really thrive under the tutelage of Gary Rowett, who can help hone his defensive skills.
His first-team opportunities are likely to be limited at Liverpool next season as well, and another loan to the Championship would suit him his current needs. Thus, a move for Grujic would be the perfect opportunity for Derby to add some real quality to their side.
