Why leaving Liverpool and moving to Tottenham could work wonders for this 18-year-old starlet

Rhian Brewster

According to reports, Liverpool academy star Rhian Brewster’s contract situation has sparked a scramble amongst the Premier League clubs. Tottenham are also reportedly interested in the 18-year-old’s signature.

Brewster’s scholarship deal at Anfield ends at the end of the season and while Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp wants him to sign a new contract, the 18-year-old is willing to leave the club in search of regular game time.

At present, Klopp has an array of attacking talents in his squad which has seen the likes of Ben Woodburn and Rhian Brewster fail to break into the first-team. While Woodburn played last season, Brewster is yet to make his senior debut despite possessing so much talent and potential.

Brewster was the top scorer at last year’s Under-17 World Cup as he guided England to glory. He has been a sensation for England Under-17’s with 20 goals in 22 games. Despite impressing for the Liverpool Under-23s this season, Brewster couldn’t break into the Liverpool side as he continues to be sidelined since January due to injury.

Understandably so, Brewster has no chance of being a regular first-team starter at Anfield ahead of the likes of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino. In fact, Dominic Solanke, who was signed from Chelsea at the start of the season, has also found first-team opportunities pretty tough to come by.

It is straight and simple that Brewster has to move on from Liverpool in order to play regularly or continue doing his hard work with the Under-23s and wait patiently for his chance to come.

Looking at the potential and talent that Brewster possesses, should Tottenham make a move for the Under-17 World Cup star?

Brewster is yet to sign a professional contract at Liverpool, despite turning 18 last month, though the Merseyside outfit did trigger the third year of his scholarship. This means that he is not allowed to speak to other clubs but if the 18-year-old decides to leave Anfield, Spurs must consider signing him.

Since Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival as Tottenham’s manager, they have looked a different team altogether, challenging for the Premier League and other silverware on offer. Pochettino has nurtured young talents and has shown a special ability to utilise them in his teams, thereby not shying away from giving them ample opportunities to excel.

At Tottenham, Brewster would be given plenty of opportunities to showcase his talent and polish his skills. The 18-year-old speedy centre-forward has already demonstrated his clinical finishing in Liverpool’s youth academy this season.

Spurs are clearly in need of signing another talented forward to feature alongside Harry Kane or compete with him, as the England international cannot be expected to deliver in every competition that the club participates next season. They need a young promising striker capable of reducing Kane’s burden.

Brewster, who won the Golden Boot in the Under-17 World Cup, is a supremely gifted young striker waiting patiently to make his mark on the bigger stage.

With Pochettino’s guidance and expertise, the 18-year-old Brewster could take his game to the next level in just a matter of few years and act as a perfect cover for Kane.
