Why Watford’s latest £10m deal to sign attacker could bring a significant change at Vicarage Road

Gerard Deulofeu

According to reports, Watford are closing in on a £10million deal to sign Gerard Deulofeu from Barcelona.

The 24-year-old impressed in the second half of last season on loan at Vicarage Road. However, Deulofeu has hardly made an impact at Barcelona, having appeared just 10 times for the La Liga champions in the previous campaign.

As reports suggest, Deulofeu could become Watford’s second signing of the summer within a matter of days.

It is clear that Deulofeu has fallen down the pecking order over the last few seasons and it seems like the 24-year-old does not have a future with the Catalan giants. In fact, the Spaniard has made it clear he doesn’t want to return to Barcelona and appeared to confirm Watford’s interest in him.

After the departure of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain last summer, it was expected Deulofeu would get regular opportunities to showcase his talent but Barcelona splashed a lot of money to sign Ousmane Dembele in 2017.

Dembele was unlucky to get injured in his first league start for Barcelona and was ruled out for four months. The injury to the Frenchman was deemed a solid chance for Deulofeu to impress and stake his claim but the forward struggled royally to make an impact under Ernesto Valverde. Eventually, he left Camp Nou for Watford on a six-month loan deal in January.

At Watford, the Spanish forward did well as he guided the club to a 14-place finish. He may have scored just once in seven Premier League games but Deulofeu was able to show glimpses of what he’s capable of.

Fast, intelligent and industrious, Deulofeu is a skilful player who generally operates down the right-wing but can also play on the left. He is quick and possesses good technique and dribbling abilities, thus making him capable of causing endless nightmares for defenders.

The Spaniard might have to improve on his physical aspect since he loses possession quite often. Also, Deulofeu can be inconsistent at times and he must rectify all that if he wants to be a success in the Premier League.

Earlier in his career, the 24-year-old played for Everton in two spells and hence, he should be accustomed to the demands of the English top-flight.

Thus, Watford must sign Deulofeu on a permanent basis as the Spaniard will bring some much-needed flair and pace to the squad. He could make a significant difference at Vicarage Road next season, provided he works on his consistency.
