Why Matej Vydra is the signing to fire Leeds to the Premier League
Matej Vydra was a standout performer in the Championship last season. Although his exploits were not enough to help Derby County secure a promotion to the top-flight, it goes without saying that he was one of their brightest stars in the recently concluded campaign.
However, it looks like he could be on his way out of the club this summer. His prolific displays have attracted the attention of several clubs, including Leeds United are one of the interested parties.
The report also claims that new Derby boss Frank Lampard has excluded Vydra from the club’s training camp in Tenerife, meaning a £11m deal could be on the horizon. Over the course of the last few years, Leeds have underperformed to a great extent.
Last season, in particular, was a nightmarish period for the club as they finished 13th in the Championship. But now with Marcelo Bielsa in charge of the Whites, it seems like good times are ahead for the club.
And if they truly manage to secure a deal for Vydra, it’s safe to say that Leeds won’t struggle in front of goal next season.
To be fair, the Whites do not have a poor team. They have some talented performers who can truly become game-changers in the near future. But they severely lacked the presence of a goalscoring machine last term.
Pierre-Michel Lasogga and Caleb Ekuban failed to make the desired impact in the 2017/18 campaign.
And Matej Vydra can help Leeds in that regard. He scored a whopping 21 goals in the Championship last season and given the physicality of the second-tier competition, it is not an easy feat.
With his tenacity, pace, creativity and goalscoring instincts, Vydra would go a long way in filling the void created by Chris Wood’s departure to Burnley last summer.
Bielsa’s appointment signaled the dawn of a new era for Leeds and the manager seems to have made an instantaneous impact with respect to the transfer activities. Vydra is a sensational talent and he is a proven star in the Championship.
After being faced with numerous woes last season, Leeds might just be on their way to securing a much-elusive promotion to the promised land of the Premier League. But to do so, the club must go all out to secure a deal for Vydra.
