Why Kemar Roofe will be a good signing for West Brom
The 25-year-old was Leeds’ top goalscorer last season with 14 goals in 39 appearances that has seen him attract interest from the Baggies.
Apart from West Brom, Sheffield United are also interested in Roofe, who has two years remaining on his contract at Elland Road.
West Brom were relegated from the Premier League this past season despite a late revival under Darren Moore. His efforts in West Brom’s final few games were visible and the club appointed him on a permanent basis last month.
Moore has a huge task on his shoulders of building a squad capable of challenging for promotion next season. So far, he has added goalkeeper Sam Johnstone to his squad from Manchester United as a replacement for Ben Foster who signed for Watford. But that’s not enough if West Brom are to secure promotion at the first time of asking.
The Baggies need fresh additions to their squad and one of the players they should prioritise signing is Roofe following the forward’s goalscoring exploits with Leeds last season. Interestingly, Roofe started his career with West Brom but failed to make the grade at the club. He spent several spells out on loan before joining Oxford United in 2015.
After an impressive loan spell, Roofe joined Oxford on a permanent basis and was named League Two player of the year before Leeds pounced on him in 2016. The 25-year-old had a decent first season at Elland Road but he burst into life last season, scoring 14 goals in all competitions. He isn’t an out-and-out striker, yet he surpassed the goalscoring tally of centre-forward Pierre-Michel Lasogga, who ended the season with just 10 goals.
Moore needs a player that knows how to score goals in the Championship and Roofe will fit the bill perfectly at the Hawthorns. The versatile 25-year-old can play as a central striker, as a No.10 or on either wing.
A signing such as Roofe would also help Salomon Rondon, a target man who can bring the ball down very well. He is a decent passer and is comfortable on the ball – Rondon and Roofe could form the perfect partnership together as a front pair for the Baggies.
Roofe is skilful, exciting and is proven at the Championship level, which would make him such a tantalising prospect for West Brom.
