Why Everton should go all out for Digne and Mina
Marco Silva is yet to make a statement with the club after his arrival as Everton’s new manager. The former Hull City manager and Everton’s director of football Marcel Brands are working to negotiate deals for a number of players.
Everton are going to have to bolster their squad ahead of the new campaign if the club are to come back stronger after what was a very disappointing campaign last time out. Former manager Ronald Koeman went on a shopping spree last year but failed to produce any results nevertheless.
Everton have been linked with a shock double move for Barcelona defenders Lucas Digne and Yerry Mina. The Toffees are reportedly interested in snapping up the duo as they aim to strengthen their backline. Everton conceded a total of 58 goals in the league last season, which means defence will be a top priority for Marco Silva.
French international Lucas Digne made the move from Paris Saint-Germain to Barcelona in 2016 for a reported fee of around €16million but the defender has so far failed to nail down a regular starting berth in the squad.
It’s hard to see the left-back do so with the presence of Jordi Alba in the squad. Alba has been one of Barcelona’s best defenders over the years and there’s no taking his spot.
Hence, the 24-year-old left-back could be convinced to make the move. Digne has reportedly asked the club for a transfer this summer and it seems as though Barcelona could grant him that wish. He made just a total of 8 appearances in the La Liga last season, providing 2 assists. He also played 3 games in the Champions League, scoring 1 goal for the club.
Digne is quick with and without the ball at his feet. He loves making runs down the left flank before sending in crosses for the attack. The former PSG left-back is a very accurate passer of the ball, averaging a pass success rate of 87.9% in the La Liga last season.
The 24-year-old is not one to shy away from a challenge. He loves having a go at the opposition and his agile, aggressive style makes him an enticing prospect.
Like Digne, Yerry Mina is another Barcelona defender who has been restricted to a bench role. The Colombian has impressed for his country in the World Cup this summer, which has led to a number of teams tracking the player.
He scored 3 goals in 3 games for the Colombians and was very much a huge part of their defence. Mina is a tall, strong centre-back who possess all the right qualities to become one of the best. The 23-year-old is extremely fast for a central defender and uses his pace and strength to shove attackers aside.
It’s not exactly clear as to whether Barcelona want to sell or loan out Mina but Everton should certainly go for the double coup. It would be a massive signing for the Toffees who will be aiming to make a strong comeback this year.
Digne could be the perfect replacement for club legend Leighton Baines, who turns 34 this year. Everton are going to need both the signings in order to considerably strengthen their backline.
