Forget it Poch – Tottenham signing this promising star for £30m could turn out to be a blunder

Why Tottenham should avoid signing Bournemouth’s Lewis Cook

Tottenham Hotspur have fallen behind their rivals in terms of transfer activity. The Lilywhites have failed to bring in new additions to the club.

However, it is high time Tottenham bring in new players in at least one or two departments. The Daily Star has linked the club with Bournemouth midfielder Lewis Cook and it seems Pochettino is interested in signing the midfielder who has been impressive for the Cherries over the last few seasons.

The manager is lining up a £30million bid for the central midfielder, who has two years left on his current Bournemouth contract. Tottenham seem ready to test the Cherries’ resolve. The Cherries are said to be playing hard-ball and want to keep their star midfielder.

Lewis Cook

The move doesn’t make sense for Spurs though, given that they possess a flurry of midfielders in their ranks.

However, Lewis Cook is a quality player. The Cherries man captained the Under-20 England squad to the World Cup title last year. He has established himself as a firm favourite under Eddie Howe and nailed down his spot at the club.

Tottenham already have the likes of Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Victor Wanyama, Mousa Dembele and Moussa Sissoko. These are all players who are capable of playing in central midfield. They are all regular contenders who provide Pochettino with a healthy selection headache before the match.

It would be hard to see Cook feature in such a bloated midfield line-up. Nevertheless, Spurs have a few injury concerns in Victor Wanyama and Harry Winks. Frenchman Moussa Sissoko limped off the field, succumbing to injury against Barcelona in their 2-2 draw in Los Angeles.

However, this doesn’t seem like a reason to go on and bring in another central midfielder, especially by splashing £30m.

Tottenham still possess enough players to cover up for the injured players. Mousa Dembele and Eric Dier are yet to return from their holidays and could seamlessly settle into the squad. It almost seems as though Spurs are making a panic buy and this could come back to haunt them in the future.

A player signed for £30million should be playing day in and day out. The youngster will not receive the adequate minutes required for his growth and it would be better if he stays put at Bournemouth.

  1. Really? Dembele is on the verge of leaving, Wanyama is always injured, Dier often deputises in defence which may become more often if Toby leaves, Winks is far from fit following serious injury and needs to be managed carefully, Amos is an exciting prospect but still young and learning, so hardly “bloated”. City, Chelsea, United all pay more than that for their fringe players and benchwarmers, so what is wrong with a bid for Cook who impressed for Bournemouth, is home grown and has top flight experience? I know you have to make a living scribbling out this stuff but it is getting tiresome when it is ill-informed opinion and skates over the facts.
