Why Arsenal must beat Manchester United to sign Jerome Boateng
According to reports by The Metro, Arsenal are set to rival Manchester United for Bayern Munich’s German centre-back Jerome Boateng. The Bundesliga champions are set to cash in on the defender, with the club well-stocked in that department.
The Metro further states that if the bidding war does ensue, Bayern are confident of getting a fee in the region of £44m for Boateng, whose current contract runs till 2021. The 29-year-old is believed to prefer moving to either Manchester or London, having spent time in the former while playing for Manchester City.
However, as far as fitting into a particular playing system is concerned, Boateng will thrive better at Arsenal than Manchester United. Let us analyse why that is the case:
Emery’s system is more suitable for Boateng
At both Bayern Munich and Germany, Boateng has shown that he is a perfect ball-playing centre-back who can play in a high-defensive line system.
The German can move forward with the ball, make recovery runs and also command the backline with utmost ease. The 29-year-old is only a bit lacklustre when it comes to one-on-one defending since he gets square on too easily. Apart from that, he is a fantastic defender to have on any team.
Perusing the respective systems which Jose Mourinho and Unai Emery may deploy this season, it would make more sense for Boateng to move to Arsenal. At Manchester United, Mourinho’s system is based on a deeper line defending and playing route-one football.
And to match the attribute, Boateng is least comfortable when asked to defend for long periods of time, as tackling is not one of his major strengths.
At Arsenal, he will get a chance to showcase his passing abilities from the back and also step up with the ball to make things happen. Furthermore, the German might be more comfortable in a higher defensive line, compressing the play for the opposition. There have been injury concerns circulating around him, but if he stays fit for a long period of time, Arsenal might receive a gem of a player.
Arsenal are still short in the centre-back department due to a long-term injury to Laurent Koscielny. So, buying Boateng will be a massive boost and it will set them up for an interesting season ahead. Hence, they must beat Manchester United for this deal and pay the required amount to sign the player this summer.
