Fantasy Premier League tips: Who should be the captain this weekend – Mohamed Salah or Sergio Aguero?

Mo Salah taught us many things during the 2017/18 season. But what did he teach to the FPL managers? #AlwaysCaptainSalah. How can you not do that if the player scores 32 goals and scores a record-breaking 303 points over the course of the season? But it’s been only a week since the start of 2018/19 FPL season and it has already started testing the decision-making abilities of FPL managers.

The biggest question of the week is whether to captain Mohamed Salah or Sergio Aguero? The final decision lies with you, but here’s some help.

First, we start with the stats of both these players:

Aguero (Home) v Salah (Away) in 2017/18

Appearances: 15 v 17

Goals: 15 v 13

Goals per Game: 1 v 7.6

Assist: 3 v 4

Minutes per goal: 79 v 105

Points per game: 7.33 v 7

Points per 90: 8.31 v 7.85

From the stats, we can see that Aguero at home is a slightly a better option than Salah away from home. Now let us analyse the options more closely.

Sergio Aguero – Manchester City

After an impressive win against Arsenal, Manchester City face all 3 promoted teams of this season and all 3 promoted sides of last season in their next 6 games. First up is Huddersfield in GW2. Aguero owners couldn’t have asked for an easier fixture than this. Huddersfield conceded 58 goals in the Premier League during the 2017/18 season and conceded 3 against Chelsea in GW1.

Aguero has scored 11 goals in his previous 7 home games but we forget that 4 of those came against Leicester in one game and 3 against Newcastle in another. But the biggest fear among the FPL community is the rotation risk.

Now that Gabriel Jesus is fully fit, he might start over Aguero and that move from Guardiola could shatter millions of FPL managers’ gameweeks. If any player is worthy of such a risk, that is Sergio Aguero. He might even come on for the last 30 minutes and still provide a return.

Mohamed Salah – Liverpool

Liverpool face a tricky game at Selhurst Park on Monday night. Crystal Palace have been Liverpool’s hoodoo team for years now and it has never been a straightforward game for the Reds.

In their last 10 faceoffs, Crystal Palace have won 4 of them. Even in their last visit to Selhurst Park, Liverpool needed a late winner from Mo Salah to claim all 3 points. Apart from this, Palace’s defence will provide much more resistance to the Reds than West Ham did in GW1.

The Verdict

On one side, there is a rotation risk with Aguero but if he plays, he is almost guaranteed to score against a poor Huddersfield side. On the other side, we have Salah who will play the full match but finds himself facing a decent opposition. It is too close to pick a winner but both players are capable of scoring points on any given day.
