Grabban and Soudani to start – Predicted 4-2-3-1 Nottingham Forest XI to face Wigan Athletic

Predicted Nottingham Forest XI to face Wigan Athletic in the Championship

Nottingham Forest will hope to register their second victory of the 2018/19 EFL Championship season, when they take on newly promoted club Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium on Saturday.

The Reds registered their first league win last weekend, beating Reading 1-0 to add to the 1-1 draws against Bristol City and West Bromwich Albion. They are currently 5th in the table and come into the game on the back of a penalty shootout triumph in the Carabao Cup against Bury earlier this week.

Team News

There are no major injury concerns for Forest heading into the weekend encounter. Goalkeeper Jordan Smith is suspended for the game after picking up a direct red card in the cup tie against Bury.

Probable Nottingham Forest XI

Manager: Aitor Karanka

Formation: 4-2-3-1

Costel Pantilimon (GK)

The former Manchester City goalkeeper should return to goalkeeping duties for the league game after sitting out of the cup game during the midweek.

Costel Pantilimon

Tendayi Darikwa (RB)

Tendayi Darikwa should come in at right-back for on-loan defender Sam Byram. The former Burnley man needs to put in a strong display after Byram’s impressive debut in the cup game.

Tobias Figueiredo (CB)

The summer signing has impressed in his handful of appearances since joining this summer. A definite starter in the heart of the defence.

Danny Fox (CB)

Partnering the Portuguese centre-half should be 32-year-old defender Danny Fox. Will look to lead his team to another clean sheet.

Ben Osborn (LB)

The versatile Englishman has impressed in the left-back role so far this campaign. Should once again feature from the get-go on Saturday.

Adlene Guedioura (CM)

The 32-year-old Algerian has started all three Championship games for Nottingham Forest this term. Unlikely that the streak will break this weekend.

Jack Colback

Jack Colback (CM)

On-loan midfielder Jack Colback has started the last two league games for the Reds and should once again feature in the line-up.

Hillal Soudani (RW)

The 30-year-old summer signing scored the only goal against Reading this past weekend. Should edge out Portuguese youngster Gil Dias from the starting XI.

Joao Carvalho (CAM)

The 21-year-old Portuguese attacking midfielder is the primary source of creativity for Forest in the final third. A definite starter at the DW Stadium.

Diogo Goncalves (LW)

Another exciting young Portuguese talent at Karanka’s disposal, the Benfica loanee should start on the left flank.

Lewis Grabban (ST)

Spearheading the attack for Nottingham against the newly promoted side on Saturday should be summer signing and last season’s second-highest scorer, Lewis Grabban.

  1. Byram will play however well Darikwa does, once he’s match fit. Darikwa had a good start last season, but faded badly as the season progressed. None of the three new Portuguese players have shown much more than an occasional flash of talent and I’m already worried the gamble hasn’t paid off. Lolley has to start on the wing for me – proven Championship player who frightens defenders. Grabban has had a slow start, but I’m pretty confident once the first goal goes in, many more will follow. Soudani is already looking like the best of the summer transfers, but time will tell if he’s consistent or not. It’s difficult to leave Osborn out with his work rate and his willingness to get up front to join the attack, but he’s a bit too lightweight to do the defending part of the job and I’d rather have the new left back in.

Hopefully the Portuguese newcomers will adapt as the season goes on, but I can’t see all 3 getting a regular pick like their fellow compatriot in defence
