Do it Puel – Handing this £3.5m star a regular role could pay rich dividends to Leicester

Jonny Evans

Why Jonny Evans must start regularly for Leicester City

Leicester City got Jonny Evans from West Bromwich Albion for a fee worth around £3.5m. The 30-year-old joined the Foxes on a three-year deal. Evans was a part of the West Brom team which got relegated last season, and so a move to a Premier League club was very much on radar this summer.

The former Manchester United centre-back is a quality player who has added an extra dimension to the Leicester City defence. However, manager Claude Puel hasn’t yet felt the necessity to start the Northern Ireland international in the Premier League barring one game. It seems like last season’s pair of Wes Morgan and Harry Maguire is currently the first-choice.

Leicester have made a decent start to the season, winning two games and losing two close ones against Manchester United and Liverpool. They now have a decent run of games from which maximum points should be expected (with all due respect to the teams Leicester are going to face).

So this is why Puel should start with the partnership of Maguire and Evans at the back. The latter is an experienced player and may not have much trouble getting used to the playing system at Leicester.

Under the current management, the Foxes are a bit different to what they were when they won the title under Claudio Ranieri. They are now a team who can play out from the back and impose a possession style of play on the opposition.

With Maguire at the back, that style of play can be easily deployed as the Englishman is very comfortable taking the ball from the goalkeeper and passing it with accuracy. It is pretty evident that Morgan is not comfortable in playing that game on a regular basis. So, it will make sense for Puel to start Evans and let him form a formidable partnership with Maguire.

Verdict

Leicester have done some good bits of business, especially in the centre-back department. Buying Evans means they are getting a player who has the experience of winning league titles. He is way better on the ball and of course, can defend well.

The games between the end of the first international break and start of the second could be good for the Foxes. Puel should give the ex-United defender a chance to establish himself.
