Why Newcastle should provide Benitez with some funds in January

Rafael Benitez did well to keep Newcastle United in the Premier League last season but the Spaniard hasn’t started this one in the best of ways. The Magpies are currently languishing in the final relegation spot after picking up just 1 point from the opening 4 games of the season.

Questions will soon be asked of the former Liverpool manager and results will be expected. But maybe, the real questions should be asked to the Newcastle hierarchy? The club have barely provided the manager with adequate funds since his appointment at the club.

This summer, Benitez was only able to bring in players on a limited budget, some of which were loan deals. Fabian Schar, Yoshinori Muto, Federico Fernandez, Salomon Rondon and Sung-Yeung Ki were all signed in the off-season but Benitez couldn’t sign a top-class player yet.

The Magpies have looked dismal in the opening weeks of the season and if amends are not made when the window opens in January, Newcastle could be facing the risk of relegation this season. Almost every single club, especially the newcomers, have all bolstered their squad with high-profile signings over the summer.

Newcastle United are one of the few clubs to conduct minimal business. But the Magpies desperately need a new hero, or at least a few players who can provide them with the cutting edge.

Benitez’s side have only been able to score 3 goals in their 4 games so far. The Magpies have often relied on that one moment to find the back of the net and that’s starting to cost them. Newcastle United are struggling to play out from the back and often resort to lofted balls picked up by Rondon high up the field.

They haven’t looked solid at the back either, with the defence conceding a total of 6 goals. Though that’s lesser compared to other clubs above them in the table, the Magpies’ backline has always looked vulnerable.

When the January transfer window opens, it’s absolutely necessary that club owner Mike Ashley provides Benitez with some real fund to bolster the squad. The Spanish coach has so far excelled with the little resources provided to him and it’s now time that the club shows some faith in its manager.

Failing to add to the squad will definitely cost the club during the business end of the season and could see Newcastle drop back into the Championship.
