Swansea making a January move for this 35-year-old out of favour English veteran would be extremely smart

Jermain Defoe

Why Swansea City must make a January swoop for Jermain Defoe

Swansea City have made a decent start to life under Graham Potter in the Championship following the club’s relegation from the Premier League last term.

Swansea are currently placed 7th in the table with 16 points from their opening 10 Championship fixtures, however, they are only four points adrift of West Brom, who are on top of the table. And while West Brom and Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds are gunning down teams in the Championship at the moment, the Swans are not too far behind them and are looking to get themselves promoted back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

However, Graham Potter faces an uphill task to get Swansea promoted, considering the likes of Derby County, Sheffield United and Brentford are playing some eye-catching football. Moreover, Swansea lack the squad depth needed to tackle the rigorous demands of a Championship campaign.

Hence, once the transfer window reopens, Potter must sign a couple of players to add quality as well as depth to his squad.

Jermain Defoe

The Swansea boss must prioritise signing a striker in January to bolster his attacking ranks and provide backup to Oliver McBurnie, who has been the club’s chief source of goals in the Championship.

One option could be Bournemouth striker, Jermain Defoe. The 35-year-old has played just four times in all competitions for the Cherries this season and is currently way down the pecking order under Eddie Howe.

The veteran Englishman left for Bournemouth after Sunderland’s relegation from the Premier League last year. He had a decent debut campaign with Bournemouth as he went on to score four goals in 24 appearances. As Defoe comes to the end of his career, he might be open to leaving Howe’s side in January in order to get regular game time.

At Bournemouth, he is not getting enough chances as the 35-year-old has been used from the bench by Howe in the Premier League.

Jermain Defoe

Swansea would definitely benefit from having a player like Defoe in their ranks. The Englishman will turn 36 next month but his wealth of experience and the technical know-how would be vital for a team aiming to get promoted.

The England international is a natural goalscorer and will certainly add quality as well as depth to Potter’s squad. He would be a resourceful player to have given Swansea’s current shortage of natural goalscorers.

All in all, Defoe would be a smart move for Swansea in January.
