Manchester United should definitely go for Andreas Granqvist
Jose Mourinho was keen to add a centre-back to his squad over the summer but was unable to land any of his targets. Hence, the manager must make a move for the experienced defender in January. Though he may be unable to serve as a long term investment, the Swedish defender is capable of tightening things up at the back for the Red Devils.
United have made one of the worst starts to their season under Jose Mourinho this time, picking up a total of just 13 points from their opening 8 games. The Red Devils have also conceded a total of 14 goals in that time and have lost their ability to shut up shop.
Most teams travel to Old Trafford to go for the wins and that’s something Jose Mourinho must address immediately. The acquisition of Granqvist will definitely not solve all of their problems but it will be a start.
The 33-year-old currently plies his trade with Swedish outfit Helsingborgs IF. He joined the club just this year after spending five years at Krasnodar. The centre-back is one of the most experienced defenders around.
Standing 6 ft 4 inches tall, Granqvist is a leader at and a source of motivation at the back. His towering presence often intimidates attackers that come up against them. The Swedish international was superb for his country in Russia, playing all 5 of their games. He also picked up 2 goals in that time. (Stats courtesy – Whoscored)
Granqvist has made a total of 11 appearances in the Swedish league this season, scoring 1 goal in the process. Centre-backs who have a happy habit of picking up goals are always welcome to the Premier League.
The defender is dominant in the air and poses a massive threat from set-pieces and crosses. He is also calm and composed while playing the ball out of the back. Granqvist averaged a pass success rate of 80.9% in the World Cup. Being a centre-back, he also averaged an impressive 1.2 shots per game. (Stats Courtesy – Whoscored)
Jose Mourinho should definitely make the move for the Swedish international in January.
