Three ideal midfielders Liverpool can target in January
Liverpool made a superb start to their season by winning six consecutive Premier League games before hitting a slight slump over the last few weeks. Jurgen Klopp’s men are now winless in their last four games and must be aiming to make amends after the international break.
The Merseyside club targeted a number of attacking midfielders over the summer after talisman Philippe Coutinho left the club in January. But Jurgen Klopp ultimately opted to bolster the squad in other areas, turning the Reds into a force to reckon with.
Over the last few games, Liverpool have lacked creativity in the middle of the park. The Reds need someone who can pull the strings and offer their famed frontline more opportunities going forward. While Liverpool possess a number of defensive and box-to-box midfielders in their squad, an attacking midfielder is one they need at this point.
Here, we take a look at three players Klopp could target when the window opens in January-
Nabil Fekir (Lyon)
Liverpool had almost successfully completed a transfer for the versatile French midfielder but negotiations broke down at the final minute. The Reds have proven to be resilient when it comes to getting their man, as was the case with Virgil van Dijk.
Klopp should certainly go back in for the Lyon captain in January. He is capable of playing a wide variety of roles in the middle of the park and will definitely flourish in Klopp’s gegenpressing football. The Frenchman has already registered 2 goals and 1 assist in 5 league games this season.
He has also picked up 1 goal and 2 assists in 2 Champions League appearances. Fekir loves running the show and that’s exactly what Liverpool need at this moment. (Stats Courtesy – Whoscored)
Christian Pulisic (Borussia Dortmund)
The Borussia Dortmund attacker was also linked with Liverpool over the summer but a deal ultimately failed to materialize. (Liverpool Echo) The American international is yet to pen a new contract as well and Jurgen Klopp should definitely go back in January for him.
Aged just 20, Pulisic has shown immense maturity and growth in his performances. The Dortmund midfielder will also serve as an excellent long-term option. Like Fekir, Pulisic is also capable of playing in a wide number of roles in the middle of the park.
He can play either as a central attacking midfielder or on both flanks. Pulisic has picked up 1 goal and 1 assist in 4 Bundesliga appearances this season. The 20-year-old will provide Klopp with an ample number of options to deploy ahead of his matchday selection.
Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal)
According to the Telegraph, contract talks have broken down between Aaron Ramsey and Arsenal over the last few weeks. Latest reports suggest that the Gunners are willing to listen to offers for the Welsh midfielder.
Klopp should definitely make a move for Ramsey given his experience in the Premier League and his superb technical ability on the ball. Ramsey is a central midfielder but he is also capable of being fielded in a number of systems and roles.
The Welshman would considerably strengthen Liverpool’s midfield set-up and could be available for a cut-price deal in the winter.
