Why Newcastle United must go all out to sign Wayne Rooney in January

According to a report from the Chronicle, Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez is looking to bolster his squad in January and has identified some key areas. In fact, Benitez wants to bring in a striker, an attacking midfielder and a left-back during the winter transfer window.

Newcastle United have endured a torrid start to the new Premier League campaign, languishing at the bottom of the league standings with only 3 points from their first 10 games. And the Magpies’ latest defeat came at the hands of Brighton last weekend.

In the defeat against Brighton, Newcastle lacked creativity in the final third. Scoring goals has been a problem since last season and it has been well documented this term as well, with the Magpies lacking a goal-creator as well as a goal-scorer.

Ayoze Perez, the player who links the play between the midfield and the attack, has been totally off-colour and that has cost the team dearly.

As Benitez hopes to bring in an attacking midfielder, it would do him a world of good if he signs Wayne Rooney in January.

Wayne Rooney has become an instant hit in the Major League Soccer since signing from Everton earlier this summer. The 33-year-old has had a major impact on DC United, helping the club to 12 wins in 19 games.

Last weekend, Rooney scored a brace in the victory over New York City FC to extend DC United’s nine-game unbeaten streak.

Rooney certainly could be that missing link between the midfield and the attack in Benitez’s preferred 4-4-1-1 system. His presence would not only be a massive boost to Newcastle’s forward department but would also bring the best out of the other attacking players.

The former England international has slowed down in recent years but commitment, hunger and desire to compete at the highest level still seems to be burning in his heart. After all, he is a veteran player with a whopping 293 career goals.

The ex-Manchester United forward would seamlessly slot into the No.10 role at Newcastle and would create opportunities for his teammates. Rooney is not only a clinical finisher but is also adept at crafting moves from a deeper No.10 position, a feature Benitez’s side are in dire need of.

He is a technically gifted player who can operate in a number of roles as per the team’s need. The 33-year-old is lethal in the six-yard box and is also a dead-ball specialist.

That said, Newcastle should bolster their attacking options in January and Wayne Rooney should be one of the top priorities for manager Rafael Benitez. He certainly could be the difference-maker for the Newcastle side lacking energy and spine in the attack.
