“Opportunity missed”, “Should have won”: Some Arsenal fans upset with 2-2 draw vs Man United + Match report

Manchester United 2-2 Arsenal: The Gunners drop points at Old Trafford

Arsenal dropped two points at Old Trafford after they drew 2-2 with Manchester United on Wednesday in the Premier League.

The Gunners went in front through Shkodran Mustafi’s 26th-minute header, with goal-line technology stamping a mark of approval. Five minutes later, Anthony Martial equalised and both sides headed back to the tunnel at 1-1.

Substitute Alex Lacazette bundled home to restore Arsenal’s lead in the 68th-minute but it lasted only 90 seconds before Jessie Lingard restored parity.

The Gunners dominated the game and deserved more than a point but in the end, a draw was a fair result for both the teams. It didn’t start the way Unai Emery had planned as Arsenal struggled to get a hold in the game and failed to match United’s intensity of play.

As the first 15 minutes passed by, the Gunners clawed back into the game and their passing suddenly became crisp. And in the 25th minute, the visitors scored to silence the Old Trafford. Torreira hit a straight ball to the penalty spot and Mustafi, getting the better of Smalling, headed the ball downwards that dropped behind De Gea.

Emery would have been gutted as the lead, however, didn’t last long, with Anthony Martial bringing the home side level. Guendouzi’s foul on Martial gave Rojo the chance to test Leno from 25-yards out with a set-piece. Leno made a decent save down to his left but from the byline but Herrera cut the ball back to Martial who scored from five yards out.

The first-half ended with plenty of action but with both sides sharing five yellow cards.

After Rob Holding was forced off injured in the first half, Aaron Ramsey too was replaced by Henrikh Mkhitaryan after the Welshman had picked up a knock earlier. The Gunners took a 2-1 lead in the 68th minute when Rojo coughed up the ball to Mkhitaryan, who combined with substitute Lacazette, who scored. United levelled immediately; Lingard caught the Arsenal defence napping and slipped the ball under Leno.

Arsenal wrestled the momentum back and squandered two glorious chances through Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan. Deep into stoppage time, De Gea saved a Torreira drive and Mkhitaryan put the ball in the net, but he was flagged offside.

The result means Arsenal are now unbeaten in 20 games across all competitions but they drop to fifth as a result of Tottenham’s win over Southampton.
