Man United beating London giants to sign this 30-year-old World Cup winner should be an absolute no-brainer for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – Here is why

Why Man United must beat Tottenham and Chelsea to sign Mats Hummels

According to a report from Daily Mirror, Bayern Munich centre-back Mats Hummels has held initial talks with both Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur ahead of a proposed winter move to the Premier League.

Mats Hummels, 30, has struggled to maintain a consistent starting role at centre-back under Niko Kovac. Kovac’s preference for Niklas Sule and Jerome Boateng in central defence has meant the German international has played just 9 times in the Bundesliga this season.

Last Wednesday, however, Mats Hummels was part of the Bayern side that picked up a 1-0 Bundesliga win over RB Leipzig with Franck Ribery’s winner putting them back to within six points of the summit. But with January transfer window looming large, Manchester United must try beating Chelsea and Tottenham to the German defender’s signature.

In Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s opening two matches, the feel-good factor has been back into Manchester United. Saturday’s 5-0 victory at Cardiff City was followed by Boxing Day’s 3-1 defeat of Huddersfield Town and all this has been achieved with absolute ease. Although the Red Devils stuttered at times against Huddersfield, the football has been fluid and exciting to watch.

But in the games against Cardiff and Huddersfield — arguably two of Premier League’s weaker teams — Solskjaer’s men failed to keep a clean sheet. That should worry the interim manager a bit, given that United have already leaked in a lot of goals this season and the first true test may be the January trip to face Tottenham at Wembley.

Before the clash with Tottenham, Solskjaer should definitely try bringing in a central defender and Mats Hummels fits the bill perfectly at United.

Hummels may not have been the defender he was two years ago but he certainly is better than any other United defender. He would bring in the winning mentality, leadership qualities and experience to this side. The German is a ball-playing defender, who is comfortable with spraying long balls across the field. He also possesses a calm demeanour and has the ability to lift his teammates and help them play better.

The 30-year-old’s ability to drive with the ball from defence will bring a whole new element to United’s build-up play. United are in dire need of a strong and solid defender, and Hummels’ combination of aerial dominance, technical abilities and international pedigree makes him a perfect fit for the club.

Already possessing an exciting attacking unit consisting of Marcus Rashford, Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku, Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard, adding a world-class defender like Hummels would certainly bolster United’s top four hopes this season.
