Wolves must go all out to beat Leeds and sign this 27-year-old Senegalese goal machine to solve issues in the final third

Why Wolves need Mbaye Diagne more than Championship side Leeds United

Wolverhampton Wanderers and manager Nuno Espirito Santo are having a rather great season. While the Molineux Stadium side wasn’t expected to get relegated, few expected them to be in a position chasing for a Europa League spot.

They currently sit 9th and are a mere two points behind seventh-placed Leicester City. However, to overcome and finish the season in a Europa League spot, they need back-up.

So far, Wolves’ main struggle has been their inability to score goals. They have found the back of the net only 23 times, the lowest among the top ten Premier League sides. Raul Jimenez leads the top goalscorers’ list for Nuno’s side but even he’s managed only 6 goals all season with right-back Matt Doherty coming a far second with three.

The Premier League side need reinforcements and their only target should be a second striker to help out Jimenez. A target man, the 27-year-old is on loan from Benfica until the end of the season.

As a result, ESPN has revealed that Mbaye Diagne is their top January target. The former Juventus striker has been in tip-top form this season, scoring 20 goals in 17 appearances in the Super Lig.

However, news outlet Turkish Football has reported that Marcelo Bielsa has re-entered the race for the Senegalese striker but Wolves need to outdo them. The Molineux Stadium side has a lot more to lose as compared to Leeds United and they need a second option to help them out. While Mbaye Diagne is a similar blend to Raul Jimenez, he still remains more prolific than the 27-year-old Mexican international.

While he had critics once doubt his abilities as a footballer, the Senegalese striker has proven everyone wrong this season, including Juventus who shipped him out on multiple loan spells before eventually letting him go.

The report from ESPN further adds that he was linked with moves to Bournemouth, Leeds United and even Hull City over the summer but Diagne opted to stay and could now make the move.

With multiple records well within reach of Europe’s top scorer, maybe there is a chance that the 27-year-old might not leave current side Kasimpasa and it could take a good offer to convince him. But given the fact that Wolves do have a decent budget, they need to take the chance on Diagne and beat Leeds to sign him.
