Wolves signing this Porto star ahead of Italian giants would be a massive statement of intent from Nuno Espirito Santo

Why Wolves should strike a pre-contract agreement with Hector Herrera

According to a report from Calciomercato, Porto midfielder Hector Herrera waited for an offer from Inter Milan in January. But an offer didn’t arrive from Inter and the Mexican has since stayed put at Porto until the end of the season.

Hector Herrera, 28, will be out of contract at the end of the season and that played a part in him receiving a lot of interest from around Europe, with AC Milan, AS Roma, Inter and Atletico Madrid all watching his situation.

The Mexico international joined Porto in the summer of 2013 and has since featured 223 times across all competitions, scoring 30 goals in the process. He was an integral part of the Porto side that won the league last season.

Hector Herrera now looks forward to a new challenge and as he has less than six months remaining on his contract with Porto, Wolverhampton Wanderers should strike a pre-contract agreement with him.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been excellent in the Premier League following their promotion in summer 2018. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side currently sit seventh in the Premier League table, four points clear of eighth-placed Watford.

The manner in which Wolves are playing at the moment, having enjoyed their best bit of form of late with three back-to-back league wins, it suggests it won’t be a surprise if they participate in Europe next season.

The Black County outfit have held the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal for a draw, and have won against Chelsea in the Premier League and dumped Liverpool out of the FA Cup in the third round.

So there are makings of a brilliant side and if Wolves are to make a statement ahead of next season, they will need to bag the signature of Hector Herrera.

A smooth operator of the ball, Herrera is a tenacious, hard-working and intelligent midfielder who has the ability to pick out a pass and come up with crucial goals. The 28-year-old stands out for his solid all-round skill set with the ball and his tremendous ability to shoot from distance and tireless running. The Mexican’s versatility of playing anywhere across central midfield is a massive bonus.

Availability of a player of Herrera’s calibre and experience in the summer could spark a fierce battle between the European elites. But Wolves have to show their ambition and get him signed ahead of the next season.
