3 Classy players West Ham’s £10m-a-year manager could sign including 25-year-old English star

West Ham United confirmed the appointment of Manuel Pellegrini as their new manager on a three-year deal on Tuesday.

The Hammers agreed a £10million-a-year deal with Pellegrini and co-owner David Gold has claimed the club will make top signings this summer.

The West Ham board have been criticised for a severe lack of investment in top players after stating their European ambition following the move to London Stadium.

Pellegrini has a huge task of rebuilding the squad and making his team play an attractive brand of football that will delight the fans. There are a lot of weaknesses in the squad which the Chilean manager has to address before the start of the season.

With that in mind, here are three players Pellegrini should sign to make West Ham challenge for European action.

Alfie Mawson (Swansea City)

Pellegrini’s priority will be to strengthen the defence first and then move on to address other areas of his squad.

Alfie Mawson

West Ham endured a forgettable campaign, to say the least, despite finishing 13th in the table. They finished with the Premier League’s joint-worst defensive record alongside Stoke, conceding 68 goals. Therefore, it is easy to determine why a strong defender must be the priority for the Hammers.

Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson could be the right man to solve West Ham’s defensive woes. The 24-year-old has seen his stock rise significantly over the last couple of years despite the fact that his Swansea team got relegated this campaign.

A no-nonsense defender with a good reading of the game, Mawson should be considered by West Ham in the summer transfer window.

Jack Butland (Stoke City)

Adrian is the only senior goalkeeper, with Joe Hart returning to his parent club Manchester City after the expiry of his loan deal. West Ham cannot rely on Adrian, who had a start-stop campaign.

Jack Butland

Stoke City’s Jack Butland could be the one to solve West Ham’s goalkeeping conundrum. The 25-year-old is one of the finest goalkeepers in England and would be available for cheap following Stoke’s relegation.

The England international is a steady goalkeeper with fantastic reflexes and will be a straight upgrade on Adrian.

Salomon Rondon (West Brom)

Salomon Rondon might be ready to leave West Brom this summer following their relegation from the Premier League to the Championship. Rondon doesn’t have a great record with the Baggies but can be a useful player for the Hammers next season.

Andy Carroll has been rarely fit, while Marko Arnautovic isn’t a centre-forward. Javier Hernandez started well but faded in the second half of the season. The current squad requires fresh impetus in the attack and Rondon could provide that.

Strong in the air and a handful for the defenders, the Venezuelan could be available for a cut-price deal.
