3 Players Who Should Step Up For Chelsea After The International Break Starting From The Leicester Game

Conte

Antonio Conte’s Chelsea side have come a long way from the team that finished 10th in the points table, a year after lifting the Premier League title. The former Italian boss has made some additions to his squad in the off-season and has made the squad stronger but the lethargy and lack of confidence within the side took its effect 5 games into the season. Conte’s side needs a few additions especially at the back and the manager will hope that he can find someone in January. But before that, Conte should make sure that his team is near the top of the table, grinding results out even in off-days.

Here are three players who should help Conte after the international break by stepping up and taking responsibility:

Gary Cahill:

The heartbeat of the side in their title winning season a couple of years ago, Gary Cahill has been one of the worst players in the side so far this season. He is a strong center half who loves to dominate the game but he has not been able to assert himself, especially in the absence of John Terry and has left his side vulnerable at the back. He is integral to Conte’s efforts at the club and he will have to make sure that he is back to his best after the international break to give Chelsea a chance of landing a title challenge.

Oscar:

The Brazilian had a decent start to the campaign but he has just not been able to find consistency in his game that has hurt his side severely during games. Oscar is a creative midfielder who loves to have the ball at his feet but with the whole squad low on confidence, the 25-year old has been nervy. He has given away the ball too constantly for the manager’s liking and has not been able to create enough chances to warrant a place in the side regularly. However, lack of genuine options that fit the bill will see Conte use Oscar atleast till January and it will be important for the midfielder to step up atleast till the end of the year.

Nemanja Matic:

The Serbian was one of the most influential players in Chelsea’s title winning season a couple of years ago and also seemed have impressed Conte who is ready to provide him with regular game time. He has started alongside N Golo Kante in the midfield for the Blues but Matic has just not been able to assert the kind of a dominance on the game that Conte wants from his midfielders. Matic is supposed to be strong and provide cover for his back four but the midfielder has been close to a disaster at times, especially with a weak defense behind him. He will have to turn his game around after the break to get Chelsea back to winning ways.
