Three Left-backs Who Mourinho Can Look To Sign In January
Football at the highest level can be very unforgiving at times and probably no one in the United squad could testify that better than Luke Shaw. The England international was signed in 2014 by Louis van Gaal with the intention of being the left-back for the Red Devils for the next decade or so. But the former Southampton star has had a torrid career at Old Trafford thus far.
Injuries and inconsistent performances have curtailed his time at the club and current manager Jose Mourinho apparently does not think he is fit for a long-term role. As such, the club is apparently looking for alternatives in the position. Daley Blind and Ashley Young have both done a decent job in the role thus far, but they are more of utility players and to compete against football’s elite, the Manchester-based outfit needs a specialist.
Here are 3 left-backs the Premier League side could look to sign in the January transfer window:
Kieran Tierney, Celtic
The 20-year old has been turning heads in the European football circuit and he is easily the most suitable candidate for the role. Manchester United have apparently already scouted him several times and the January window could be a great time to sign him.
Blessed with great power and technique, he is also a key member of the Scottish national setup. His grit and determination are also commendable, two qualities which will help him throughout his career. Despite heavy interest from Tottenham and Chelsea, United are the favourites to sign him and they should go ahead to do so without further ado.
Ryan Bertrand, Southampton
When both Chelsea and Manchester City are chasing your signature, it is obvious that you are making great progress as a footballer. After leaving the Blues in 2014, Bertrand has settled well in Southampton and has made a lot of people to take note of his performances. An ideal modern-day fullback who can not only defend but is also excellent with his overlapping and crossing, the 28-year-old would be a great buy for Mourinho as he is not only in his peak but also knows the demands of a top-level club in and out.
Danny Rose, Tottenham Hotspur
If Tottenham sign Tierney, it will spell the end for Danny Rose’s time with the North London club and United could capitalise on that. Proficient at both left-back and left wing-back, the 27-year-old was a vital cog in Mauricio Pochettino’s side which went on to finish 2nd in the league last season. Technically sound and blessed with great pace, Rose would fit directly into Mourinho’s system and will help the side create a lot more during attacks.
