3 Players Who Would Have Offered More Than Arsenal’s Latest Signing Rob Holding

There is no doubt that Arsenal need to sign more defensive stars this summer if they need to strengthen their squad prior to the start of the new campaign. Gabriel and Per Mertesacker have not been up to the mark last term and Arsene Wenger knows that in order to win more titles, his defence needs to be solid as well. For that purpose, the French manager is looking to add more quality stars to his back-line, though no new players have been signed yet.

One defensive star who has moved to the Emirates recently is Rob Holding, from Bolton Wanderers. Bolton was relegated from The Championship and will now be playing in the League One in the upcoming campaign.

Due to this, the England U-21 international was looking to complete a move away from the club and Arsenal provided him with the perfect opportunity.

However, the youngster is still quite inexperienced and the Premier League giants would need someone who could claim a regular spot in the starting eleven and here are three defensive superstars that Wenger should have signed instead:

3. Kostas Manolas (AS Roma):

The 25 year old Roma center-back refused to sign a new deal with the Serie A giants, as per his agent and is wanted by Arsenal in the current transfer window. He has made 86 appearances for the Romans scoring twice, since moving to Italy back in 2014. The Greece international could be a permanent replacement for the out-of-form Gunners’ center-backs and could take up the role alongside Laurent Koscielny at the heart of the defensive line, in case the move goes through.

2. Marquinhos (Paris Saint-Germain):

Another better option for Wenger would be PSG’s Maquinhos, who is said to be unhappy at the Parc des Princes due to the lack of game time that he is getting at the Ligue 1 outfit. His brother Luan had already confirmed that the London based club were interested in acquiring the services of the young Brazil international and a potential deal could be on the cards, though there was an interest from a host of other clubs as well, including Manchester United, Chelsea and Barcelona as well. The 22 year old superstar can play both as a center-back and a right-back and could surely be a useful player to have amongst the ranks.

1. John Stones (Everton):

The England international has a price tag of about £50m put on his head by current club Everton, with Manchester City said to be keen on signing him. The 22 year old center-back is a really good player and it would make much more sense for Arsenal to sign him, if he decides to leave Goodison Park this summer. He is still quite young and could be a future star for the Gunners, with Wenger looking for such a quality centre-back. He is also a home grown player, which would be another benefit for the French manager and his side. He looks a really confident player and could be a special star in the future, if nurtured properly now.
