Three Replacements For Wayne Rooney Who Everton Can Target

Wayne Rooney was written off by most after struggling at Manchester United last season. At the back end of last season, many were convinced that they were witnessing the end of Rooney at the highest level.

Having joined United from Everton as a teenager in 2004, Rooney scored an eye-popping 253 goals in his 12 years before returning to his boyhood club at the start of this season. Analysing his contributions this season at Everton, it is fair to say that there is still some life left in the old dog.

Rooney is fit and firing in flashes but he has helped Everton throughout this season. Despite scoring 10 goals in 31 Premier League appearances, the 32-year-old’s influence on the game has diminished and his recent performances have come into question.

According to the Daily Mirror, Everton are willing to sell Rooney just less than 12 months after signing him. Should the Toffees offload the former England international, here are three options manager Sam Allardyce should look to sign in summer to replace Rooney.

Carlos Bacca (Villarreal)

Carlos Bacca has been a journeyman in his career but wherever he has gone, the striker has displayed his true class. He has found the net wherever he has played, spending time at Sevilla, AC Milan and currently plying his trade at Villarreal.

The Colombian is hardworking, prolific and is blessed with decent pace. He would be a mouthwatering prospect for Everton to consider should they sell Rooney but at 31, Bacca won’t be a long-term solution.

Jamie Vardy (Leicester City)

One of the most in-demand strikers in English Premier League, Jamie Vardy could be a fantastic addition to the Everton ranks.

Vardy has proven to be a prolific goalscorer for the Foxes and was instrumental in helping them to a fairytale title triumph in 2015-16. He is a clever footballer, blessed with searing pace and superb movement. Vardy is the proper example of ‘fox in the box’ kind of striker and Everton desperately need someone of his qualities to take charge next season.

The England international is currently operating at the peak of his powers and his outstanding work-ethic would be adored by the Everton faithful.

Shinji Kagawa (Borussia Dortmund)

There are no doubts that Shinji Kagawa is one of the most underrated playmakers across Europe but his career has stalled in the last few years due to his poor form and injury problems.

Kagawa was deemed as a flop at United and he returned to Dortmund in 2014. Since returning to Dortmund, the Japanese international has performed well but not up to his standards.

Blessed with a brilliant first touch, great vision and a keen eye for goal, Kagawa is capable of unlocking defences with classic through balls, shrewd crosses and intelligent runs. He would be the ideal Rooney replacement as the Japanese midfielder would slot right behind the main striker and create opportunities for his teammates.

After failing to make a mark at United, Kagawa would be itching to have another shot at Premier League football if Everton comes calling in the summer.
