3 Reasons Why Hakan Calhanoglu’s Dream Move To Chelsea Should Not Happen

3 Reasons Why Chelsea Should Not Sign This

It is often said that a team’s best asset is their playmaker or attacking midfielder. Turkish midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu has certainly been an asset to whichever team he has represented so far. Born in Germany, he eventually opted to represent his country of origin, Turkey and has 26 international caps to his name.

He started out his career with many German junior clubs before moving to Hamburger SV, where he gained real prominence and attention. His performances during his solitary season at Hamburg earned him a transfer move to Bayer Leverkusen, where he has only gone from strength to strength, thus establishing himself as one of Europe’s top playmakers.

Calhanhoglu was recently caught up in some controversy as he was banned from playing football until the end of the current season for his involvement in a saga with Turkish club Trabzonspor and one of his former clubs, Karlsruher SC. He was reprimanded for agreeing to join Trabzonspor and failing to honor the agreement.

That has effectively ended his career with Bayer Leverkusen as he has been linked with a move to Chelsea in the summer and he openly said that he wants to be Chelsea player next season. He has been very impressive at his current club and that has seen many clubs take a keen interest in him. Chelsea look to be at the front of the queue for his services and although many would argue that it would be a good move for the Blues, we at Soccersouls think it’s a move that both the player and the club should avoid.

Calhanhoglu is a very good player in his own right, but considering what Antonio Conte has implemented in his Chelsea side, it would be very difficult to see a silky player like Calhanhoglu fit into the Chelsea mould. Here are three valid reasons why Calhanoglu would be a bad fit at Chelsea –

The current Chelsea XI doesn’t have room for a playmaker

Considering that a central midfielder like Cesc Fabregas has found it tough to make it into Antonio Conte’s concrete plans, it’s hard to see how a wide/advanced playmaker like Calhanoglu will fit into the Chelsea scheme of things. In the forward positions, Conte obviously prefers quick players such as Willian and Pedro to flank the main man Diego Costa. Calhanoglu certainly isn’t known for his pace and moving to Chelsea would see him become a squad player.

The Turkish playmaker would be better off joining a team that relies on the passing kind of style, something Calhanoglu is very adept at. Unless he is planning to become a squad player at Chelsea, he really should look to avoid making a move to Stamford Bridge.

Antonio Conte prefers players that work their socks off

Although this isn’t to say that Calhanoglu doesn’t work on the pitch, it’s rather a reflection on what Conte expects from his players. Despite being exceptional on the ball, his work ethic off the ball has sometimes been questioned by pundits, who feel the Turkish midfielder would rather fit into a team that gives their playmaker the freedom to stay forward, rather than participate in the defensive duties of his team.

Calhanoglu should expect to be a squad player if he joins Chelsea

Chelsea after Antonio Conte’s arrival have turned into a formidable team and currently lead the Premier League table by a massive margin that looks unassailable by the teams that surround Chelsea. Conte would surely love to continue with the same formula as opposed to making wholesome changes to his team and style of play.

They have been very direct as an attacking force and the direct inclusion of Calhanoglu would definitely shake things up, that is something Conte would be averse to. So even if Calhanoglu does sign for Chelsea, he will become a squad player who is used from time to time or mainly as a substitute. Hence, it’s definitely a move that he should avoid making.
