The Premier League is back in action within two weeks and this league never disappoints. Leicester, a football club who was fighting the relegation battle in the 2014-2015 season became the champions last season around. Chelsea, on the other hand, endured a hellish season and are now looking stronger and better with pre-season bringing a lot to light. Arsenal have managed to remain “consistent” in their approach and they still haven’t found a striker to fire them to Premier League glory this time around as well. But the main talking point since the end of last season was the arrival of Guardiola and Mourinho to rival clubs. With the best managers coming to England meant the best players would follow suit too. The fans were not disappointed to think that. Mourinho meant business in the transfer market and he lived up to his standards. With the Pogba deal potentially through, United could be all set to mount the title challenge. But the pre-season brought to the forefront the biggest problem that United are facing at the moment. Their defence is not watertight and everybody knows how Mourinho likes it. 2 players competing for one position is a philosophy that Mourinho abides by, but by the looks of it the quality to cover for Bailly or Smalling is not in the United ranks. Making a 5th signing is probably not that much of a far fetched idea as it seemed a while ago.
Leonardo Bonucci
One of the best centre-backs in the world, Bonucci knows every trick of the trade there is to know. Strong in the air, along with his ability to read the game and his immaculate sense to stick with players and not give them an ounce of space makes him one of the best there is. If United signs Pogba then this deal will most probably not go through as Juventus won’t be willing to part with their rock solid defender, having already let go of their star striker to Real Madrid. Rumours even though false tend to reveal a lot and this deal can be one of the best signings of the transfer season if it happens. Bonucci can also work and help develop Bailly better, so it’s a win-win for Mourinho.
Raphael Varane
With the likes of Phil Jones and Daley Blind as backup central defenders, Mourinho won’t be breathing a sigh of relief the entire season. Raphael Varane is another option which Mourinho won’t be giving up on. Having worked with him in Real Madrid, he only has glowing reviews for the young French international. Having all the right qualities to be the best centre-back makes him a very attractive ball player. A little short on experience but Mourinho would be able to get the best out of him and that would certainly balance the entire United defence out really well. But a hefty price will come with it.
Fabinho
The Brazilian-born right back is one of the players that Mourinho would like to conclude a deal with. He could easily compete for the right back position along with Darmian or Valencia or as Mourinho has a habit, he could even make him play left back and provide cover for Luke Shaw as Rojo does not seem like a viable or a reliable option for Mourinho. The Monaco player impressed during the match against Arsenal in the Champions League and has not looked back since. Always sprinting and running till the last minute is something that Mourinho asks of each and every player and this buy would certainly give him an edge over his Premier League opposition.
With the 4th signing almost in the bag Mourinho could go for a 5th and offload a few of the baggage that he has been carrying around and trim his squad down to 24 which might help them win the title this season.
