5 Worst Open Goal Misses Including Torres And Gervinho

It may look easy watching it from a television or shouting it out from a bar, but when it comes to one on ones with the keeper or an open goal, even the best in the business tend to get nervous. It is not fair to say that the player was devoid of any self-belief but all that goes in from 30 yards out will sometimes be missed from 2 yards. There are so many strikers who have missed sitters and it is highly impossible to rank anyone nor find the entire list.

The below 5 are the few misses that i came across watching the beautiful game.

Fernando Torres Vs Manchester United.

When it comes to open goal misses, no one can ever forget El Nino’s famous miss against Manchester United last year. Torres slipped past the defenders and rounded off the on rushing keeper with ease and just when the Chelsea fans start to jump up in joy, Torres does the unthinkable. Instead of walking the ball into the goal post he decides to shoot and slashed the ball past the open net.

Diego Forlan Vs Juventus

The worldcup sensation, star striker at Atletico Madrid currently playing in Brazil with Internacional had a short spell at Manchester United that hardly comes to the thought of anyone. But the Uruguayan did play for Manchester United for three years and scored 10 goals in total. Though it was a pre-season match against Juventus he missed this sitter.

Maxi Rodriguez Vs Chelsea

Maxi Rodriguez did not do justice to his captain’s cross as he was just 2 yards and an empty goal post away from a Liverpool goal.

Fahad Khalfan Vs Uzbekistan

Not much of an known player or a match that most of us care, but i took this video into the list because of the timing of the miss. The scoreline was 0-0 and it was the start of the Extra time when the forward decides to do this.

Gervinho Vs Bradford City

It was for this miss by Gervinho that i decided to compile this list. Arsenal lost out to a league two side Bradford City thanks to the poor strike force they have. The miss by Gervinho costed Arsenal a place in the Quarter finals of the competition – Arsenal’s decent chance of winning silverware this season.
