7 goals, 8 assists – Liverpool signing this reliable PL star would add some much-needed depth to their attack

Why Pascal Gross would be a top addition for the Reds

Back in January, Metro had claimed that Liverpool were interested in signing Brighton forward Pascal Gross. However, a deal didn’t materialise as Brighton kept hold of their star amidst the relegation battle.

Pascal Gross, 28, has been a reliable performer for the Seagulls since joining from FC Ingolstadt in the summer of 2017. He was voted Brighton’s Player of the Season after his seven goals and eight assists contributed heavily to the side surviving relegation in their first season in the Premier League.

The German playmaker’s productivity did take a hit last season as he managed only three goals and as many assists in the Premier League. Yet, Liverpool must rekindle their interest in Gross and sign him ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

The Reds haven’t had a good pre-season so far, with Jurgen Klopp missing his front three due to different reasons.

The likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have been given an extended break following their exertions in the Africa Cup of Nations, while Roberto Firmino lifted the Copa America with Brazil. So, it’s important for Klopp to add more cover for the likes of Firmino, Salah and Mane in this off-season.

An out-and-out forward is what Liverpool need in the upcoming season and they could go a good job by acquiring the services of Pascal Gross. The Brighton man can play as a winger, as a wide midfielder and even as a second-striker, which illustrates his versatility.

He is moderately paced, which explains why he can cover so much ground and influence the game with his incisive passing skills. The German can also be a lethal presence in the opposition box as well as from dead-ball situations.

The 28-year-old can also make well-timed runs behind the opposition backline, which makes him a real threat in the final third. Neither Gross is the best of dribblers nor he boasts of searing pace to stretch the opposition backline, but he can carve open a rigid defence with a killer pass.

He is exactly the kind of player the Reds need to complete their attack, at least for the next season.

Verdict

The acquisition of a player of Gross’ technical ability, vision and goal-threat will undeniably improve the quality of Klopp’s squad at Anfield ahead of the new season.

The ex-Ingolstadt man will also increase competition for places within the Liverpool squad which will help the club compete on all fronts in the upcoming campaign.
