83% Pass Accuracy, 6 Defensive Actions – How Manchester United’s £89m Signing Looks Like Money Well Spent

Paul Pogba’s second debut for Manchester United was always going to be the highlight of the weekend. The French midfielder had just returned to Old Trafford as the world’s most expensive midfielder after having cost £89 million. After missing the opening game against Bournemouth due to suspension, Pogba wore the famous red shirt after more than four years. His performance against Southampton has received rave reviews from the likes of Thierry Henry and Ryan Giggs, but what do the statistics tell about his second debut?

Pogba did not score on his debut and the limelight was taken by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who continued his impressive form by scoring two more goals. In almost every other regard, Pogba was up there with amongst the best in the pitch. Admittedly, some of the tricks and shots that he attempted did not come through, but these were to be expected from a player who has not been involved in the pre-season. Pogba has not been on the pitch since featuring at the Euro 2016 final for France. Yet, he seemed to have limitless energy as he ran almost the entire length of the pitch in the 90th minute to attempt an effort at goal.

It was clear that the midfielder was given instructions to be present at both ends of the pitch. However, Pogba had a greater influence on the defensive proceedings with six direct actions like tackles and interceptions. At the other end of the pitch, though, he created only two chances. The average pass accuracy of 83% does not sound great for the world’s most expensive player and he has to improve quickly in this regard. Pogba has been seen as an old-fashioned midfielder who can cover great distances. This was especially true as he ended up running 11.2 km – the third best in the match – over the 90 minutes.

At 6 ft 3 in, Pogba has the physical stature to dominate the midfield and also be a major threat from set pieces. He came closest to scoring a goal in his second debut from a corner, but it was directed just over the bar. Southampton players found it difficult to dispossess Pogba and this is likely to be a recurring theme over the rest of the season. For a player of his size and stature, the midfielder should have had more than 52% aerial duels won, but expect this figure to improve once he achieves full fitness. It looks like £89 million well spent by United.
