“We’ve had some cruel setbacks and blows, but I believe we’re closer than what people think,” Gerrard said.”

He also insisted that such a performance would give his sideroom for improvement.

The former Liverpool star praised Jermain Defoe’s contribution despite a lack of playing time.

“His numbers have been good considering the chances he has had,”

Defoe was bought on loan from Bournemouth and has been deployed a second fiddle to in-form Alfredo Morelos throughout this season.

However, the 36-year-old has scored six goals and provided an assist so far this season.

The former Liverpool star expects Defoe to fill the void of the Colombian striker who is currently on suspension as a result of the red card picked up on Sunday.

Praises Steven Davis and Kamara

Gerrard heaped praise on the partnership of Steven Davis and Glen Kamara in midfield.

However, their arch-rivals are in pole position to lift the Premiership title for the eighth time in a row.
