A Lamela Alternative? Who Is The Serie A Winger On Tottenham’s radar? Everything You Need To Know

Federico Chiesa

Scout Report – Federico Chiesa

Tottenham Hotspur made a decent start to their league campaign but have not been able to find consistency in results, which has seen them slip out of the top-4 in the PL points table. Mauricio Pochettino did not add too much quality to his side in the summer transfer window and it might come back to haunt them in the busiest parts of the season.

So it does not come as a surprise that they have been linked with a number of exciting prospects. According to Tuttomercatoweb, Tottenham Hotspur are very much interested in signing Fiorentina youngster Federico Chiesa. The 20-year old is one of the most exciting youngsters in Italy at the moment but what does he add to Tottenham’s squad? Here is a scout report of the versatile attacker.

Also wanted by Juventus, Napoli, AS Roma and PSG, Chiesa is a gifted footballer, who graduated from the academy at Fiorentina. He moved to the senior side just last year but has already made 41 appearances for the club in the top tier league in Italy. He has represented Italy at the U21 level and is not too far away from a national team call-up.

Capable of playing on either wing and as a support striker, the 20-year old is an intelligent footballer who uses the space on the field to his advantage. He loves to play short passes to get through defences but is a more than capable dribbler, who can create chances consistently in the final third.

His positioning off the ball is a big asset of his and his awareness of space and teammates around him is impressive for a player his age. He has a lethal right foot that can find the back of the net from outside the box consistently and Chiesa loves to cut in on his right foot and unleash a shot, testing opponent keepers at least once in a game.

He has 7 goals and 6 assists in Serie A already, (4 goals and 3 assists this season) and his potential is quite evident.

His defensive awareness is, however, an issue he really has to work on. He is not a hard worker and does not track back regularly, which could be a problem when he plays at the highest level. The other issue he might have if he moves to England is his lack of physical attributes. He is not too good in holding on to the ball and though his skills often win him free-kicks, he needs to learn the art of hold up play if he is to be a hit in the Premier League.

Tottenham Hotspur and Mauricio Pochettino have done extremely well with young, growing talents from across the world and though Chiesa might not walk into the first-team in London, the environment at the club is perfect for his growth. He could, however, cost up to £53m but it’d be safe to say he’d be a good investment.
