Whenever there is an unhappy player, there’s at least a one club willing to risk everything and make a move at him, as they feel that the player could be exactly what their team needs in order to finally complete the slot.
It’s the perfect time to reinforce your side now that the transfer window is finally open, so what the teams need is to be extremely aggressive if they intend to turn things around and face the second half of the season with a better semblance than they did to start the year.
One of the teams that’s going to be more active during this winter transfer window is Slaven Bilic’s West Ham United, as the Hammers are willing to spend a lot of money in order to go back to the contention and get away from the mediocrity and inconsistency that has plagued them since making a move to the London Stadium.
We all know that one of the biggest problems that need to be addressed by the Hammers is their offence, as they’ve mightily struggled with their strikers. Nevertheless, the biggest issue for this team is definitely their other side of the ball, being a complete disaster on defence through most of the year.
So, it appears that Slaven Bilic is keen to pursue the want -away skipper from Southampton Jose Fonte, as the Portuguese standout is reportedly done with being a Saint and is asking for a move out of Saint Mary’s.
Even if Claude Puel has never said a word about letting Jose Fonte go, it’s very likely that the veteran will hit the exit door as soon he has the chance, and if the reports are to be believed, then West Ham United have agreed an £8 million fee with Southampton for their unsettled defender.
Fonte could be one of the biggest signings the Hammers could do for many years to come, as the veteran centre-back is currently at the pinnacle of his career, even becoming a European champion in the last Euro playing alongside Real Madrid’s Pepe.
The Portuguese defender is one of the most reliable and consistent defenders we’ve seen in the Premier League this year, and even if van Dijk is getting most of the attention due to his youth, Fonte has also been a key piece of the Saints’ defensive success.
The 33-year-old is an outstanding passer and he can help his team create their offence, as he is quite reliable with both feet and has an aerial game that is simply off the charts. Nevertheless, the fact that he’s already on his wrong side 30 is a bit discouraging for most of the teams that could be interested in him.
Having said that, West Ham could have an advantage over other sides when it comes to signing him, as it’s very likely that they overpay for him due to their current despair to turn things around.
Fonte won’t fix all for the Hammers, but he’s definitely going to be a step in the right direction. Go for it Bilic!
