Why Tottenham Should Do All It Takes To Sign Joao Cancelo To Solve Their Right-back Woes

Tottenham Hotspur do not have too long left in the transfer window to lure their top transfer targets to the club this summer and this has seen them get constantly linked with some of the finest players in Europe. Mauricio Pochettino lost a first team star in Kyle Walker to Manchester City for decent money and is now looking for players who can replace Walker in the squad.

One such player they have been extensively linked with a move for is Valencia star Joao Cancelo. Also wanted by Chelsea and Juventus, Cancelo is one of the most exciting prospects in this role in Europe and has established himself at the highest stage already. Valencia are demanding around £25m for the fullback but the question is whether he would be a decent option for Spurs?

A product of the Benfica academy in his native country, the 23-year old first moved to Spain on loan to the Mestalla in 2014. He did not take long to establish himself in the first team, making his loan move permanent just a year later. He is now their first choice right-back which has helped him break into the Portuguese national side last year.

He already has 5 international appearances and 73 La Liga appearances, and has gathered some serious experience in what is a critical time in his career.

A defensive minded full-back with loads of confidence on the ball, Cancelo is a technically gifted player who can dribble past opponents with ease. He loves to sit back and keep his side away from danger but is more than capable of pulling out crosses from dangerous areas.

He is strong in his hold up play but needs to work on his aerial ability. But at 23, he will soon turn into a super star and is a wonderful option for Spurs.

Pochettino’s side are currently without a senior right-back for the first game of the season against Newcastle as Kieran Tripper picked up an injury in a pre-season game against Juventus. Kyle Walker-Peters is an exciting prospect but Pochettino is not ready to trust him in the top flight and wants Cancelo to take that position this season.

Trippier was decent last season when he replaced Walker and is expected to be the first choice. But the Portuguese star is a really exciting option and will not stay on the bench for long. Pochettino loves youngsters who are gifted and have the ability to thrive at the highest level and surely, Cancelo will be a player who he will love to work with in the future.
